I've noticed that I have completely opposite instincts when it comes to black metal and death metal. With black metal, I like the nastiest, dirtiest, muddiest, most brutal, lo-fi stuff out there - subgenres like war metal, blackened death metal, black thrash, raw black metal, 1st wave, blackened crust, etc. - bands like Archgoat, Celtic Frost, Revenge, Barathrum, and so on. Anything glossy, melodic, or gothic just sounds unbearably cheesy to me.
With death metal, I'm the exact opposite. I'm all about those Swedish melodeath bands. With black I have no tolerance for cheese, but here I have a weirdly high tolerance for cheese - I don't care if it's Hypocrisy singing about aliens, or whatever. It sounds lame, but I would almost say I like death metal with imagination.
