What do a music producer does?

What do a music producer does?

What's the diference between a composer and a producer?

Composers enhance music.
Producers ruin music.
/thread

Producers have to be composers
Composers don't have to be producers
And so producers > com posers

>Producers have to be composers
Not necessarily. They could to production for another artist, especially if they use live instruments.
I wouldn't call someone like Rick Rubin much of a composer, for example.
But nowadays lots of producers are also composers and vice versa.

pathetic

Unless its hip-hop, producers literally get paid to press record
this

don't listen to this retard OP.
a composer writes music in terms of tonality, melody, progressions, arrangements, harmonic and instrumental structure etc.
a producer sculpts the sound of that music and brings out the best of every element, and makes sure the mix sounds the best it could possibly sound

a decent analogy would be buildings i suppose; the architecture designs it, and the engineer figures out how the pipes and wires are gonna fit, as well as making sure it'll still be standing in 50 years

thanks.

do a traditional music course will teach me composition and a producer course will teach me production, right?

A producer adds effects and shit so it sounds professional. Record yourself with your laptop and see how it sounds. Sounds like shit. Producers are supposed to take that and turn it into something that sounds good and can be marketed to a mass audience without them complaining about sound quality. They also mix the music. Mixing is when you make the instruments you recorded louder or softer, so that the song sounds even. Kind of like the sound guy at a concert, except not in real time. A producer also adds any effects the band might want on their music, like a fade out at the end or making the singer's voice echo or something like that. Finally, especially in modern music, a producer is also often responsible for writing electronic backing tracks. So that's what a producer is supposed to do. In reality, they just ruin music. Their entire job is to ruin music.

>"muh pressing buttons" meme
are you actually a musician by any chance? have you ever tried to produce a track? if not then maybe you should keep your shitty opinions away from the easily influenced.

yes, but neither of them will teach you creativity. that's something you have to cultivate for yourself. and don't worry it's not some god-given gift that some people have and some people don't. it's a skill that can be trained, albeit in a very different fashion to other skills.

judging by your answer you clearly know nothing about music production and should stay away from answering any questions based on it.
any reason why you think producers "ruin" music, as you put it?

>In reality, they just ruin music. Their entire job is to ruin music.
HAH! HAAAA HA HA HAA HAHAHA! SEE, I TOLD YOU PRODUCERS RUIN MUSIC! I KNEW IT FROM THE BEGINNING! YOU IDIOTS DIDN'T BELIEVE ME AT ALL! Take that, and Is he retarded too? Huh!?

creavity is linked to mental illness user, all artists have some kind of mental illness (depression, bipolar, schizo, autism, etc).

Not all people have creativity, but all the people that want to do art has creativity.

The people that lacks creativity becomes those boring old accountants or lawyers.

I don't think it's as simple as that. Creativity isn't just about coming up with something unique and original but also about making it cohesive, structured and generally fitting within a theme. You can be a creative genius who's constantly shitting out crazy innovative music but if there's no underlying theme or any real filtering process then you're just not a good artist. A good artist prunes their shitty or incongruent ideas to ensure that the final product is something that is bigger than the sum of its parts, and that takes more than just sheer creativity.

If you produce but don't compose you are a prostitute
If you compose but don't produce you are a wanker

Good lawyers are very creative.

to add, I'm not so sure about the whole "mental disorders = creativity" meme. Yes, it may be true that those suffering from illnesses tend to be more creative but that doesn't mean that well-adjusted people lack that ability completely.

technique != creativity

schizos tend to score higher in creavity because their brains can't properly filter the messages of the brain, is like the eyes are harwired to the ears and the speech to the taste or some shit like that.

Not really, they score low on creativity test.

acording to most brain scans, creative brains tend to imitate schizophrenia.

most people do both now but just say producer

I never said that technique = creativity, I said a good artist is more than just creative, they also have good filtering processes (in terms of which ideas they choose to execute and in what context)
Mental illness in this regard is both a blessing and a curse, since those with disorders tend to see the world in a drastically different (and sometimes very interesting) way but at the same time they can lack the ability to make good decisions about which ideas work to enhance and solidify the theme and which ideas only serve to "muddy the waters", so to speak
And you know what, you can grow up your entire life being completely uninterested in the arts, but 150μg LSD and 12 hours later, you could be a completely different person with a totally unique perspective on things. The mind is much more malleable than people give it credit for.

I wouldn't argue against the link between creativity and mental illness since it's a widely researched topic but I don't think it's fair to assume that only mentally ill people can be creative

most artists have some level of mental illness and there's plenty of musicians who kill themselves.

neurotypical people generally don't pursue the arts, even while they can enjoy and consume them.

Not much, but a producer does more than just write the music.

A producer (ugly) ghostwrites for an ''''artist'''', the artist (good looking) collects mad pussy

again, I'm not denying that. I just saying that you don't HAVE to be mentally ill for SOME creativity to exist. all ducks are birds but not all birds are ducks mate.

This, as with almost every skill in life, time and practice is what remains king. Even inspiration can be made to appear more frequently by practicing creativity.

Yeah but that's because most lawyers are shit.

a composer is a professional musician

a producer is anyone who can operate a mouse and keyboard, and pirate Pro Tools/FL Studio/Ableton

Even time and practice can be categorised under one concept: dedication. It's all it really takes. Some people get there faster, some people take a while longer. All in all there are too many variables to give a clear and concise answer, and the time you spend worrying about whether you're a "true" artist or not is time you could have spent practising your craft and improving

You don't know shit, you're all over thr place with your definitions. Some producers mix, others don't, there are sound engineers, or mixing engineers for mastering and mixing. Sometimes the producer write electronic music yes, sometimes they write other types of music. Go read more my friend, you are throwing everything into a bowl.

by the same logic you could say that a composer is anyone who can print blank music sheets and hold a pencil, while a producer is a professional recording engineer.
can this meme die already please? it's spouted primarily by insecure teenage guitarists who'll never amount to anything in their life because they spend too much time complaining and not enough time making music

Yeah it's hilarious watching people who know nothing about a subject constantly degrade it.
>Mixing is when you make the instruments you recorded louder or softer
yeah mate that's all it is. all those guys in multimillion dollar recording studios with mixing decks that could rival a space shuttle cockpit are just fiddling around with volume sliders all day.
fucking morons i swear.

Yes, dedication is the word, like one writer, after being asked how he became famous, said (paraphrasing): I had to become good and make connections, five hours a day I wrote and read, and five hours a day I kissed asses.

yep that sounds about right. such is the life of any artist.
the problem is that authentic, genuine artists will only appeal to a very select minority and that minority is people who are good at judging authenticity. art that appeals to absolutely everyone is not art, it's barely entertainment

The difference is smaller and smaller every day.
