Auschwitz-Birkenau was a concentration camp and then later also a death camp. Most of it was still a concentration camp. I can imagine that the pool was used as a water reservoir in case of fire.

That's what allows Denialism to even exist in the first place. The entire historiography of the Holocaust rests on basically a handful of papers and a few heavily damaged archaeological sites. We rely on testimony for just about everything else, which is not always reliable or useful. Not a denier, but even the judge in the Irving case said that even one murder often produces thousands of pages of evidence, and thus he would have expected the murder of millions to produce a virtual mountain of proof.
