Automatic weapons aren't the real threat.

Semi-autos and bolt actions are because people have to aim rather than spray and pray.

Furthermore, hunting rifles (which are essentially civilian legal sniper rifles) are way worse because they fire powerful cartridges meant to take down large animals and can do so from quite a distance away.

IMO, they should pass a law/regulation requiring a national gun registry and turning firearms in to national armories for safekeeping. Owners would pay a tax to fund their storage and when they wanted to use them they'd have to do so on an army range.

You already trust the government with your other freedoms, gun nuts. You need to compromise on this one for the good of the nation.

We don't. Some do, but really we didn't want them. Before the assault weapons ban they were extremely rare. Less than 1% ownership among all gun owners.

However, after the ban was lifted, they became prevalent for 1 reason. The Clinton administration and the ATF banned Soviet and Chinese import of milsirp, along with designating 7.62×39 and 5.45 as pistol rounds. They banned the popular (nearly unanimously owned) Sks as well as the svt from import. They also made laws making sure repros must have American parts.

So that meant that at the time the ban was lifted, shitty but functional AR-15's cost less than an SVT with the price of SKS's equalling them. However 7.62 surplus was banned making ammo cost equal. For a little bit, 5.45 in AK patterns was the best you could get when they banned that too.

So if you want a semi automatic rifle for hunting large game, target shooting, protection, or hunting small game, you either chose the shitty M1A or mini 14 which are more comfortable to shoot semis but are trash that cost 1k+ or you get an AR-15 you never wanted (to say less about some horrid American semi designs derived from sporterized bolt actions or a scaled up .22)

Currently Russian Sks rifles are upwards of 600 in good shape. Svt rifles have been 1500+. If you need a semi auto or want one, your choices are black military rifle, shit, or the unaffordable.

An Sks In Canada and svt from Russian import in canada cost 120-150 dollars. Even Mosins are that expensive here because of the ban. Now you know.

Full auto capability isn't needed to be classified as an assault rifle. The M16 had it's full auto ability removed after the initial models and yet they're still considered assault rifles.
