Mad Men shows the dedication and hard work that ad agencies put in to create advertisments

Mad Men shows the dedication and hard work that ad agencies put in to create advertisments.

The show makes it seem like ads are delicately crafted, and designed to make the consumer happy/nostalgic/etc...

Then why is it that ads today are so STUPID?

TV, radio, magazines, billboards, youtube, internet pop ups.
Every ad I see is so completely retarded, they have never once compelled me to buy something. I've discussed this with my normie friends and they all agree, they don't buy into ads at all.

Is Mad Men lying?
Or has the advertisment industry given up since the 1960s

Both are true. It takes intelligent and hardworking people to make shitty stupid ads that will catch the attention of normies.

Yes, Mad Men is lying. For every "good" ad from the 60s that anyone remembered, there are literally thousands of totally garbage ads long forgotten.

People need to feel that they are smarter than adverts.
If the advert is smarter than its demographic it will never sell.

If the ad appears dumb, it makes people feel smart and that they won't be fooled.
The first law of conmen is to play a fool to catch a fool.

Those that believe they won't be fooled are usually the first to be fooled, i.e. you can never fool anyone that is paranoid about being exploited. But you can easily fool someone that believes they are too smart to ever get exploited.

If you ever watch an advertisement on TV that you think is terrible, there is a 99% chance it was created by a team led by an MBA who has less than 5 years experience in marketing and doesn't understand why some targeted marketing methods are so successful while others are godawful.

Is the age of advertising dying?

I watch and read most shit on the internet, where an ad blocker stops me from seeing them. I never listen to the radio or watch broadcast TV. Neither do most of my friends. Basically if an ad isn't on a billboard or something physical I can walk past and see, it doesn't exist to us.

What about the people who are actually too smart to be exploited

They only show the top 1% good ads in that series. They're not asking Don Fuckin' Draper to make ads for the low tier brands.

play a fool to catch a fool, works every time one people who think they are too smart for something.

What about internet ads?

pornhub is a VERY active website. This is just speculation but im sure it is up there with google & facebook in terms of traffic. Who the hell has been paying the money to keep those ads up for years, does anyone ever click on them?

Literally everybody thinks that advertising doesn't work on them. They prey on your subconscious.

>going to a fucking porn website without ad block

Who the fuck does that?

>Mad Men shows the dedication and hard work that ad agencies put in to create advertisments.
Dude, are you baiting? They're drunk off their asses 90% of the time, spitballing ideas that only occasionally make sense. All of Don's pitches are random ideas that pop into his head that he trusts only because his gut tells him it'll be successful.

Modern advertising is much more sophisticated. They test different campaigns to see which works best, leveraging research to make sure their clients get their message to the right audience. If ads today are stupid, it's because that stupidity is effective at spreading a message.

But I make all my purchases based on internet research and cost ratios.

Also lmao, "advertising doesn't affect me" top fucking kek. You're a consumerist whore like the rest of your friends.

It doesn't matter if they are stupid, you will recognize a brand and it will be tracked as one of the acceptable brands to buy when you buy product X.

They may not work the way you think they are supposed to work, but they serve their purpose, which is brand recognition.

>Modern advertising is much more sophisticated. They test different campaigns to see which works best, leveraging research to make sure their clients get their message to the right audience.
They do this shit in the show. Thanks for confirming you didn't watch it.

A huge amount of research and money goes into advertising and it's an industry that draws some of the most intelligent people out there

The fact that you're discussing the ads with your friends show that they're working exactly as intended

...

Not always.

They just don't always show it because it's super dull to do so.

this :
If you see an ad for brand X soap you won't go out immediately to buy some soap. but when you're at the store and remember you need soap you'll be more likely to get brand X than brand Y/Z

The adds reflect the consumer

Why are ads today stupid? Because the population is stupid. There are a lot more people with more money than sense so you target the easy prey. Just add nigger music, dancing, stupid jokes, etc. Can't go wrong.

Now watch ads targeted towards rich people. Rich is the new standard.

turn off adblocker for a second.

The ads are fucking everywhere

Also, most people now browse the internet through their phones and don't use adblocker because of it.

>going to a porn website ever when it's literally free everywhere

Doesn't Don just spit out the "toasted" idea in the first episode with zero preparation or research? I thought they made that pretty clear to show he was some kind of advertising wunderkind. I feel like this is how things go more often than not on Mad Men.

that doesnt answer my question

yes, I will admit that advertisments serve their function by raising awareness about the products & brands they serve. But why do ad agencies have to do that in such a cancerous way? Don't ads cost money? Such elaborate sets, cgi effects, costumes, and actors...

Why would a company spend thousands of dollars on a 20 second ad that annoys the consumer, when they could accomplish same the task in 5 seconds?

This show is about white dudes making advertisments?

Sounds boring, I'll just go watch Evangelion again.

Bullshit.

This only works for consumerist types. Not autists who never buy anything without a full analysis in Excel.
