They were shot back to back, so more than likely Malick told Bale "God is beautiful, look at this bird" and Bale assumed he'd be on either movie, both, or neither.

Yeah, I was so geeked when the footage leaked because it was one of my favorite directors mingling in a music festival with some of my favorite bands (Fleet Foxes, Cut Copy, Arcade Fire, Iron & Wine, Neon Indian, etc). The thing is he's not joking, Malick was doing some goofy stuff like having people just come up and initiate conversations with Bale with no script and Bale just had to ad lib like it was all part of the scene
