p much this. Modern jazz is for the most part irredeemably derivative and just not that interesting. There's nearly 100 years worth of interesting jazz to listen to

Modern jazz is definitely not entirely derivative, but a lot of the innovations definitely have more context to them if you have listened to jazz of the past so that way it's easier to digest.

If you think jazz is any more derivative than it's ever been then you know nothing about jazz
