I'm not a libertarian though because I totally support legislating morality. If I ran the country there would be no taxpayer funded libraries, and porn would be illegal. Here's the thing. I support people's rights to own guns, but I'm not totally settled on assault rifles. On the one hand, I feel like a ban would be restricting personal liberty, but Omar couldn't have killed as many people if he could only buy a pistol.

It's used for sporting purposes. They're a blast to shoot. They're effective in hunting certain game. In an ultimate SHTF situation they would be extremely useful. Honestly I think they're terrible choice for home defense. They wouldn't be my first or even second choice. But that's irrelevant. There's 30 million AR-15s in the country and they're rarely used to kill people.

As far as the AR-15 and it's friends go they are used for, things like hunting, sporting, and competition shooting.

Heck they make up a pretty big percentage of rifles in modern competitions.

In 3-Gun competitions they are damn near the majority of rifles. This is in addition to being a handy rifle for home defense and if necessary the defense of one's nation from threats internal and external should the need arise and the person make that decision.

Level 3 armor is for all pistol rounds including .44 magnum. Level 4 is rifle rounds. Those are usually limited to plates.

I'm fairly certain all the people shooting out to 500 yards with civilian AR-15's aren't using 'super secret military' ammo.
