Those who advocate for a British exit from the European Union seem to think that they can turn back the clock on globalization. They can't.
Isolationism is not an option in the 21st century. No country can shield itself from the effects of global interconnectedness, whether its regarding climate change, transnational organized crime, cyber threats, the global economy, finance and trade, or even the movements of migrants and refugees.
Those who claim they can turn back the clock to some golden age do not understand the nature of globalization today, nor the serious economic and geopolitical consequences that come with trying to roll it back.
Needless to say, the decision on Brexit will have profound implications for British foreign policy and its role in the international arena: punching above its weight will no longer be tenable.
You'd be shooting yourselves in the foot if you do this Britbongs.
Sincerely, An American political scientist that knows more about your country and the EU than you.
Parker Moore
This is retarded. The EU is a customs union that shields us from the rest of the world. Brexit means we will be free to engage with the world without being shackled by the EU. We will be more globally engaged, not less, when we leave.
Do you realise we aren't allowed to strike our own trade deals at the moment?

We are almost entirely reliant on the financial sector and trade with europe. The big banks have all said they don't want brexit and will happily hop off somewhere else if the economy even looks remotely sour. And you think the EU will be keen to give us a good trade deal, did you see what they did to Greece?
Britain was only a super power because of the empire. Without it we have nothing to offer on our own.

The banks aren't going anywhere. They will be fine. If anything we'll be able to give them a better regulatory environment if we stay. We constantly have to fight the EU because they want to impose higher and higher taxes on the banking sector, knowing it will disproportionally affect the UK.
It's in everyone's interests for the EU to give us a good trade deal. If they don't they will hurt themselves, and they are in a worse financial situation than we are. Do you seriously think they're going to massively destabilise themselves in order to punish us? And anyway, is that really the sort of club you want to be a member of - one that punishes you if you leave? Sounds more like a protection racket to me.
We buy more from them than they buy from us. They need us as a market. If both sides started imposing tariffs, we would profit from it.

Everything you've said is insanely delusional, the strength of the pound is one of the primary reasons the banks base themselves in the UK.
The EU will make an example of us, if we get a better deal outside why would any country want to stay in? The amount we import from them is ultimately insignificant.

I don't understand how opting out of a cartel and pricing your own trade to compete with the EU is the end of the world.
Whenever the EU passes some gigantic tax or does something stupid like Russian or Cypriot sanctions then there's the UK to compete with them and get all that business instead.

I know it wouldnt seem so. However, in the US, everything is more on a local level. Im in southern California, and the culture here is different from utah for example. The people of California are proud to be Californian and as most of us here have shared recent historical events we feel connected in that way. Examples: OJ simpsion trial LA riots The expulsion of the african american infestation from Los Angeles

Banks base themselves in the UK for a whole number of reasons including:
>stable regulatory environment >favourable tax regime >commitment to rule of law >English is the world's business language >Timezone straddles USA, europe and asia >There are lots of other banks here (clustering is beneficial) >International nature of UK banking sector >London's culture and vibrancy
To say it's primarily because of the strength of the pound shows that you have no clue what you're talking about. The pound goes up and the pound goes down just like any other currency.

But this isn't true, only 24% of goods and services are exported to the EU. The UK currently cannot make free trade agreements with India. Why? EU has been blocking it for 14 years.
How big is India's economy again? How much do they trade?
Oh they share your language and common law?
And stop thinking that this vote is about the current status of the EU, you should look ahead and think about how it might look in 10 or 20 years. Did anyone think the EU would become this large, power hungry and undemocratic institute 20 years ago?
You're going to get fucked, just like The Netherlands was in 2005 and >currentyear

At the end of WW2, there were just about 100 sovereign states in the world. Today ,there are nearly 200. The idea that globalization causes or requires consolidation into greater political bodies is absolutely false. As the world becomes more globalized, the need for countries to unite politically has disintegrated in favor of mutual cooperation between independent countries.

Well said, burger.
But you know what? It's a good thing that you have this sentiment, it just shows the true nature of Americans: always having this warped ideal of having to regulate and control the west like an "alpha" because "COME ON GUYS DO WHITE PEOPLE STUFF" and start wars with subhumans minding their own business in the desert because OH SHIT, the world isn't all peaches and freedumb! muh feelings! :(
Your sentiment of good vs evil is ultimately what destroys the west, ironically. You bomb people first, they get angry, they fly planes into your landmarks, you keep bombing people, they flee to Europe, you encourage the UK - the last bastion of peace, order, justice and security - to stay cucked like a bitch and get ultimately overrun with Islam.
And when Europe dies, there will only be two ideologies left: white anarchist cucks who will be taken over by greed and ultimately destroy civilization, or a brown mongrelized world of shit that will be taken right back to the stone age.
But we've had enough of your shit. We will leave the EU - a foreign union to us because we're actually Anglos and not Europeans, pull out of your feeling wars with the mudlands and live our lives in peace while you spend all the time on earth you have trying to change the minds of niggers and arabs when they clearly won't and never will after decades of the "war on terror".

we can control our borders, retain our sovereignty and preserve our cultures while still establishing strong trade deals with everyone
The EU system could maybe work in a mainly European EU but not in a Muslim/European one. Europeans have somewhat similar cultures so we could connect to eachother pretty strongly and allow lots of travel without the worries of cultures being dissolved or lost. Europeans can adjust to a different European culture much more readily and willingly then a Muslim.
Anyway the point is Europeans don't wanna be minorities in longstanding mono-ethnic Nations so aslong as the EU keeps pushing that it won't work.
EU is gonna collapse one day regardless of this Brexit.

All the potential promises that the EU could provide would be taken away by the corruption and incompetence of the institution. An unworkable solution is useless for problems.
In another timeline, the EU was purely an economic union that didn't have a one-size-fits-all currency and wasn't interested in establishing foreign policy for a bunch of disharminious states with no inherent interests. It was structured closer to the Articles of Confederation and became a power of its own.
The EU in this timeline existed primarily to prevent inter-war among states and to facilitate free trade without setting fiscal and monetary policies. It took the path closer seen Latin America than in the United States.
All this, was possible. Instead, it became a shitshow.
