To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand MGMT. The dissonance in Kid’s melody is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of music theroy most of the riffs will go over a typical listeners head. There’s also the fact that they said on record that Time To Pretend, Electric Feel, and Kids aren’t for true MGMT which is deftly woven into characterization of Congratulations. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these songs, to realize that they’re not just tasty- they say something deep about MUSIC. As a consequence people who dislike MGMT truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the lyrics in Andrew’s and Ben’s existential The Youth. “The youth is starting to change are you starting to change? are you? together” which itself is a cryptic reference to the cynical and toxic environments of the music industry today. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as MGMT’s genius wit unfolds itself in there ears. What fools.. how I pity them.
