Noise gates do not alter tone. Noise gates deactivate when the signal passes a threshold, so basically they deactivate when you hit a note and only gate noise when no note is ringing. Equalizers improve tone if used correctly.

Compressors do not increase physical string sustain but they increase audible sustain. They can create infinite sustain in conjunction with vibrato. You can have infinite sustain with vibrato without a compressor as well, but, in the absence of feedback, the sustained signal will generally be quieter than the note right after you picked it. However, with a compressor the sustained vibrato will be just as loud as the initial note.
