well there's a distinct sound to gothic rock, alot of them listen to industrial and shit too, but i'd say gothic rock is the traditional route of it all. as with most other subcultures it is derived from a music scene

don't quote me on this. pretty sure joy division was the first as they experimented with melancholic elements and lyrics in punk music. after ian curtis killed himself it was pretty much the cure's spotlight from then on.
but im sure you're aware of gothic literature and architecture too so its kindof a mix of shit, so i guess you could be into those and still be goth without listening to the music
