In this instance "dark" is meant as in "unknown," as we know little about it compared to the side of the moon we have been able to see and land on. Neil should know this.

it's definitely not obvious that there is a side of the moon that never faces earth and calling it "dark" is not terrible although I'm sure some people think there is a part of the moon that the sun never shines on, so I sympathize with Black Science Man a little bit
