If only they could have diversified their economy and promoted the growth of the service industry. Sadly they were too busy handing out free shit to change course when oil prices crashed. Such cases on the gommunist South America

>Venezuelans go for socialism
>Ruin their country
>Run to argentina
>Get citizenship
>Vote for socialism

Lole

THIS IS WHY WE CAN'T HAVE NICE THINGS

So no South American nation should be a democracy?

>implying the people didn't vote for their own self interest

This is why you don't let greedy right-wing politicians plunder the country for too long.

Chavez was a protest vote, just like Trump. The poor were sick of being ignored.

>socialism

Venezuela is not socialist any more than any given European country.

Chavez just liked to call himself a socialist.

Chavez nationalized a ton of private enterprise and scared off foreign investors which is the kind of thing socialists like to do and which is what left-wingers in Europe had the common sense to stop doing a couple decades ago.

based Chavez helping Portugal economy buying assembled laptops for children.

N O T R E A L S O C I A L I S M

>allow anyone to vote
Democracy was a mistake.

Chavez spent more money in other countries than in his own... Once they bought a cargo ship for US$130 mio.

I want to save them

Weeaboos can't even save themselves. How are you supposed to do that?

Showing them the greatness of capitalism of course.
Also, I'm not lost. And I'm not a weeaboo.

Can't Brazil and Colombia just annex this pos of a country already? It's not humane to just sit idly by while their dictator government fuck their people in the ass.

How much of Venezuela's economic failures can be attributed to socialism and how much can be attributed to a failure to diversify their economy?

well they failed to do it because of socialism so there

If he had spent that money investing in his own country's human capital and industry outside of the energy sector, perhaps his country would not be in such dire straits today

Failure to diversify is mostly due to socialism though. No on wants to invest in a country where your assets can be taken at a whim. The country itself is incredibly rich in natural resources. It could have been the Norway of South America.

Norway and Saudi Arabia also nationalised their oil industries. That by itself doesn't make a country socialist.

It's just that Chavez was both incompetent and corrupt.

Anyway my point is that people seem to think that Venezuela has their economy structured like the USSR or Cuba but in fact they have a pretty normal economic structure. They just fucked up their oil sector that happened to be their only source of wealth.

maduro literally took food from food companies so they could blame the foreign powers to try to starve them to death
sometime ago tons of itens were found in some containers

True. Anti-Gulenist expropriations have caused a similar chilling effect in Turkey, once considered a promising emerging market, where the inflow of international capital has plummeted in the wake of Erdogan's increasingly authoritarian power gains.

>Failure to diversify is mostly due to socialism though

Chavez only came to power in 1999. What were the right-wing government doing before he came to power? The oil industry in Venezuela has been in existence for almost a century, by then.

The true story that nobody likes to tell is that before Chavez the country was ruled by a corrupt right-wing government that did nothing more than sell oil and offshore the profits to their Swiss bank accounts.

They were the reason that Chavez got elected in the first place and they are also the reason why the country is shit right now.

venezuela was the richest country in latin america

Yes, right wingers are also capable of ruining countries. My problem is the lack of a free market, not whether or not the government is mostly left or right wing. And let's not white wash the current government or their ideology because it's equally as much cancer as the previous one.

It was richest in the same way that Saudi Arabia is rich. It certainly wasn't a developed economy.

And now that oil is no longer profitable at 50$ a barrel, Venezuela is an open air holodomor

yeah because the retarded communists cant rule for shit
Venezuela had become the richest country in Latin America and one of the twenty richest countries in the world, with a per capita GDP higher than Spain, Greece, and Israel and only 13% lower than that of the United Kingdom.”

>The true story that nobody likes to tell is that before Chavez the country was ruled by a corrupt right-wing government that did nothing more than sell oil and offshore the profits to their Swiss bank accounts.
Nah, it was very corrupt but not commie-level corrupt. Modern socialists are the worst kind of populists: they will nationalize entire industries and redistribute some of the wealth to their voting base, then run the economy like imbeciles and be surprised that they are doing a worse job than the private sector did, and still blame them when it fails.

They implemented many half-baked schemes of price control that were textbook cases of hyperinflation and bread lines. No one was really surprised by what happened

GDP means nothing in an oil state. You are literally proving my point. Where are all the developments that were funded during this golden age?

well they were there

They probably didn't do a good enough job, or else someone like Chavez wouldn't have popped up. They were doing a much better job than Chavez, though. Funnily enough, some of them blame poor Colombian immigrants, who flooded Venezuela back when it was doing very well and voted for tax and spend populist lefties.

What happens now? Is Maduro gonna go full Cuba mode?
