/lbg/ - Letterboxd General: Pleasant and Inspiring Edition
PRETTY BAD.
You wanna talk about it, honey?

This post really hurt my feelings
imagine being over 30 and having this much free time
I'd literally kill myself
who posted that that's over 30?
>imagine being over 30 and having this much free time
perhaps they are wealthy and have the luxury of time
>being a NEET for life
Sounds comfy.

OLD THREAD:
Kill List is great. Field in England is "alright". Not a fan of anything else.

I like him and want to watch his new movie really bad
I've never been as interested as most cinephiles seem to be in national cinemas as categories. I suppose Jean Renoir, Jean-Isidore Isou, and Robert Bresson do have something in common other than that they all made films in French, but I have no idea what that might be. I'm not saying that there are no characteristics of national cinemas, or that an article purporting to show that Bresson or Godard might have some Renoir-ian roots might not be useful, but rather that directors, the whole output of one director, studying that, has always proven more fruitful for me than generalizing about nations.
>Auteur Theory was a mistake.
Dicuss.
your life was a mistake you dumb faggot
>Dicuss
biggus dicuss
The most essential point about auteurism for me is the way that seeing film B by a director can completely change one's perception of film A, even to the point of making it seem like a different film.
Very true point. Many such cases
ok, please discuss DW Griffith's The Birth of a Nation in light of Intolerance (and/or Broken Blossoms and Way Down East, which also have themes against prejudice and discrimination)
lol ok, when is the essay due, prof.?
Didn't realize this was r/truefilm...
The Birth of a nation has a scene where interracial sex is basically equated to rape and the heroine is killed whereas Broken Blossoms does the opposite and has sympathy for the characters. I think it really is as DW Griffith said that he just took the book to screen and didn't realize the contextual racism of the time.
...
Thank you to the user that suggested George Washington to me last night, its been on my mind all day. Absolutely gorgeous film
Any recomendations for tonight? I have advanced screening tickets for 20th Century Women at 7 30, looking for something to watch when i get home
Last 3 ive enjoyed are George Washington, Fat Girl and The Thin Blue Line
Wow, have you guys seen this list? It includes the best users of letterboxd, in a non ranked fashion.
letterboxd.com
Sure is full of great folks in there!
more like eli gays
I do like most of those users. The others I've not heard of.
I read somewhere that most of the racism is from the book and the Civil War stuff was all Griffith, but I can't say for certain
Personally I just think Griffith was a bit of a rube. He was the son of a Kentucky Confederate Officer and obviously was raised thinking a certain way, but he really never develops the awareness to transfer his Victorian sympathies for the poor to those of other races until he became a national celebrity and half the country called him on it. All his early films are about damsels in distress or the downtrodden underclass, then he makes an epic about how former slaves are conspiring to ruin the nation and the Antebellum upper class are the victims. You'd have to be a moron to not see the hypocrisy there
Now watch the even better George Washing
Mmm, dunno when it's getting UK release though. Also initial reviews weren't too good. I'm holding out hope though.

This is Reddit. This is Memes.
Can patricians, e.g., like Bond films and kung fu movies? How do I reconcile an enjoyment of genre film and an enjoyment of art film?
btw On Her Majesty's Secret Service is pretty great
Yes, they can. I'm a patrician and I just watched Enter the Dragon.
This is Reddit. This is Memes.

If Alan Resnais will die in our lifetime but he is already dead then what does that mean?
Wait, did someone actually confused Kiarostami with Kaurismaki? Sweet potatoes, how embryonic are you people?
I have no idea what these threads are. Can anyone explain?
