I unironically love this album. Jesus of Suburbia is so great.

Go to bed, you have preschool in the morning.

Look, enjoy whatever music you want without caring about what people think. But don't expect people not to judge. The former can't exist without the latter.

babbys just shit on it because it was immensely popular, great record and god tier pop rock

good fucking album. don't let people tell you it's not just because they have to hate commercially popular music.

posting in soy thread

you're either underage or just drowning in the nostalgia my pal

the pinnacle of 2000's pop punk

>2018
>Green Day

2004 called, they want their vague anti-authoritarian views and eyeliner back.

Oh look non musical arguments against- you guessed it! Music! Who would have thought Sup Forumstants could be contrarian?

pop punk isn't punk

Okay so you're underage.
Also a criticism of the vague anti-authoritarian views IS a criticism of the music, hun.
You should probably go back to lurking.

>Generic, Repetitive chord structuring
>Token ballads, cliche to fuck
>Whiny Vocals
>Angsty Teen Lyrics

The production is nice though but I've stepped in puddles with more musical depth than this steaming turd.

Pop Punk isn't music.

It's more like a chocolate bar or one of those kid's magazines.

It's okay OP I'm with you. Dunno why there are such strong feelings on this album, literally every album has those who like it and those who don't.

Also
>YOU'RE NOT THE JESUS OF SUBURBIA
>THE SAINT JIMMY IS A FIGMENT OF
>YOUR FATHER'S RAGE AND YOUR MOTHER'S LOVE
>MADE ME THE IDIOT AMERICAAA
The climax of the album, fucking awesome moment.

Do people really listen to Green Day? I always thought they were one of these bands that don't produce music with lasting appeal. Not to mention they're just throwing shit in the wind to get money from the producers, no passion in their work whatsoever.

We all agree that, while Jesus of Suburbia is top notch, Letterbomb is the best track, right?

It's really not very good at all. It's an album about social issues with the youth and the political situation at the time but no one involved in making it understood any of those issues. It amounts to middle-aged men whining about things but with no actual content to any of it aside from a half-baked, forced narrative that's never really developed about some fictional characters who have nothing to them and do nothing because Greenday wanted desperately to be compared to The Who.

It's a powerfully cringey listen. I used to be a massive Greenday fan but some of their stuff (this and Warning in particular) are just too hard for me to bear these days.

Yeah, it's pretty good but I also listened to it when I was 15 so it's sticking with me to the grave. That's just how this album works.

1. Give Me Novocaine
2. Jesus of Suburbia
3. Letterbomb
4. St. Jimmy
5. Homecoming
6. Holiday
7. Wake Me Up When September Ends
8. American Idiot
9. She's A Rebel
10. We Are The Waiting
11. Boulevard of Broken Dreams
12. Whatsername
13. Extraordinary Girl

>chord structure
It's a pop punk record, you're looking in the wrong place. Despite that though Jesus of Suburbia and Homecoming break that stereotype.
>token ballads
Whatsername is the closest thing to a ballad on the album.
>whiny vocals
It's some of the strongest and least whiny on any of their records- sounds like you're just giving generic criticisms of the genre and hoping they're true in this case
>angsty teen lyrics
You use angst only as it applies to who the record appeals to, not the actual content of the record- it was like, the most massive rock record of the 2000s, of course a lot of teenagers are gonna end up having listened to it (another non musical judgement for music)

Letterbomb was always my favorite. My teenage angst always went overboard from that song. The good old days.

It's Billie Joe's favorite song on it, I believe.

>it was like, the most massive rock record of the 2000s

Whoa there, it's one of the biggest but let's not forget that Hybrid Theory and Meteora happened in the 00s.

You also listened to dogshit at 15, so now that is sticking with you as well.

yeah linkin park were huge, but i don't think they ever captured the zeitgeist as well as green day did with american idiot.
well maybe with a thousand suns, but thats just me

No need to be upset over a teenager listening to teenager music. Also, don't pretend you can't sing this album's singles by heart. We all can.

I agree with

The album was force fucked into my head by the media, thats for sure

Political zeitgeist, sure. LP did try with Minutes to Midnight, though. But in terms of sheer sales at least Hybrid Theory reached a lot more people.

Isn't Hybrid Theory the best selling non greatest hits record of the century?

gayest thread of ever.
>zeitgeist
>gre*n day
>gayness
no thanks

>Fuck the system!
>Hi I'm Billie Joe here on MTV to tell you to fuck the system!

Something like that.

>It's a pop punk record
Exactly. It was destined to be vapid garbage for edgy hot topic teens.
>Strongest and least whiney
So you admit they're still whiney at least?
>The Record appeals to teens
Because it's disposable garbage for teenagers!

Gay Day

>Bad Lyrics
>Hurr durr that's not a musical judgement!

Um. Yes it is

You nut it's about political media
>more buzzwords
Oof
>whiny
I'm only talking what you assume to be whiny since you obviously have a gripe with the genre and not the record itself
>appeals to teens
Same thing said about countless respected groups, i.e. The Beatles in their time
The criticism "angsty teen lyrics" is centered around who listened to it, not the lyrics themselves.

gay

in my opinion the album that killed green day, still an alright album. homecoming is better than jesus of suburbia.

American Idiot felt like a serious step backward after Warning.

What I'm trying to get at is that this album is a product. A manufactured product for teenagers to enjoy, not the bold musical statement as you seem to think it is.

Or is the criticism "angsty teen lyrics" that the lyrics are wrote specifically to appeal to angsty teens?

I don't understand how that is not a criticism of the lyrics?
Naturally teenagers listened to this music because the music was wrote for them to feel edgy enough about being anti-authority without actually having to piss anyone off.

no u
>it's green day so it must be another straight fuck the gubbmint record for the kids
t. very obviously hasn't listened to the album and is assuming from whatever the board told you. You assume that I think its good solely because it's woke revolushinn xD or something. Good political lyrics but it's not the majority of why it's a good record.

gay

I have listened to the album and it fucking sucked. I even played through the Green Day Rock Band game.
I've addressed why I thought it sucked -
>Crap lyrics
>Bad vocal performance
>No standout instrumental playing, everything is so by the numbers that it hurts
>You cannot ignore the image / message that comes with the album considering it is part of the nature of the album, The band would not of put the effort in otherwise.

Moreso to the point, what do you think makes the album good? You've yet to give us a list of reasons past the fact you think it is good.

Great album. Many people seem to hate it even though they haven't listened to it.
>its green day = it bad album

The songwriting is pretty good- it's not super technical, you can't call his voice super special, and it's doesn't do one specific thing or the other that is insane. It excels as a pop punk record- it seems varied but consistent. You got usual stuff like title track, songs that are more so alt rock like holiday or extraordinary girl, the better punk tunes like letterbomb and st. Jimmy, and songs with interesting song structure like jesus of suburbia and Homecoming. It's not really as much about direct politicism as it is the feeling of living in that society, and the concept consistently supporting that. It's one of those records that paints a vivid picture in your mind. Honestly can't say how it feels if you don't live in America, as it the lyrics are written about that life. Imo his voice is perfect for this record, his lyrics are very percussive (if that makes sense, just the delivery just has a lot of punch). The tracklist works good- no two songs next to each other get gratuitous, but it's still consistent and smooth, and I enjoy the concept. The production is perfect- its less raw than punk typically should be, but thats to account for the more interesting compositions (there's obviously a lot more going on than on like warning or Dookie, and the production needs to support that, and does), and it just has a big sound. It comes down to really simple stuff in composition- mostly just major scale melodies, but they are very good melodies- it's a case of complexity does not equal quality.

gay

>It doesn't do one specific thing or the other that is insane

Exactly why I hate this album and band. Literally nothing about them is special in any way.

They are strong songwriters- you are saying that musicianship and technicality have to be the selling point. Being well rounded in music is a thing. The solo on Jesus of Suburbia is great- the slide guitar in give me novacane is interesting- the Indian melodies in extraordinary girl are nice- but they are just bells and whistles for the base of the song- chords and melodies. Some people don't think that is interesting enough, I get it. When a song is potent at its base, it is good.

I'm not saying you have to be super technical, not at all.

I'm just saying there is nothing standout about this band or album. so I don't see the appeal. Adding small textures to a generic sound does not make it anymore interesting to me.

gay

>>chord structure
>It's a pop punk record, you're looking in the wrong place.
>but they are just bells and whistles for the base of the song- chords and melodies.

You seem to have contradicted yourself.

In a nutshell: the bells and whistles don't matter, and the chords are pop punk simple. Therefore its a total piece of shit.

Well I mean I remarked that they didn't do any certain thing that's INSANE and you jumped on that and said that means they are entirely non unique. And I wouldn't say that they just made some pop tune and thew some cool instrument over it- it's like, you take something like OK Computer and strip it to just the chords and vocal melodies, would it be nearly as good or interesting? And you still say at its root it's generic, so I assume you don't think the base chords are melodies arent very good. Can you tell me how so? "Bad chords and melodies" tends to be a buzzword, so if you could in any way tell me how the base of these songs don't hold up, id like to hear it.

Oh okay expert what does generic chords mean then??? It's like saying "green isn't a very creative color". I'm saying that chords alone don't necessarily make the song either-songwriting doesnt mean throwing shit at interesting chords- You could take the exact same progression and make a great song and a shit song.

>I have low T and love Pop Punk
Yikes

>green day poster asking mu tryhards real musical questions
>argument ends because nobody on the board can substantiate actual musical claims
>against green day posters
Holy fuck

...

NO TRUMP
NO KKK
NO FASCIST USA

By the way we're like 50 fucking years old and STILL PUNK ROCKERS DOOD!

Fuck Green Day.

>ITS NOT OVER TILL YOURE UNDERGROUND
>ITS NOT OVER BEFORE ITS TOO LATE

>Billie Joe breaks down crying during live performances
Yea there's no passion at all, such a soulless band

You're embarrassing. Go masturbate to death grips

>Billie Joe breaks down crying during live performances
Lmao what a fag. None of their songs are emotional enough to warrant that.

That sounds pretty gay desu. I'm not paying to go to a concert to see some faggot crying with running mascara all over his face.

>DUDE FUCK RELIGION LMAO
>DUDE FUCK DA GOVERNMENT LMAO

American Idiot is a Punk Rock masterpiece through and through; it takes the political nature that formed within 70s-80s Punk and combined it with Alternative Rock, Art Rock and Pop Punk. As such, it was the last true Punk album and the logical conclusion to Punk Rock. The entire album relies on a conceptual idea (the utter banality of modern society under the corruption of office) that is demonstrated via the main character's struggles with suburbia, anguish and depression caused by his own family. Each track thematically represents the contrast between political turmoil and personal conflict, such as the melancholy of reality in Boulevard of Broken Dreams and the isolationism from the cruelty of life in Wake Me Up When September Ends, to the bluntness and utter disgust of government corruption in Holiday and American Idiot. This takes the listener on an epic journey through societal hell, unprecedented in Punk since perhaps Zen Arcade. Not only that, but musically, the album is Green Day's most ambitious work yet. Jesus of Suburbia separates itself via its multiple instrument changes and shifts, like a puzzle seemingly connecting into one, then shattering abruptly by the end. And plus, the aesthetical choice to include black, a shroud of bleakness and desolation, and red, for riled fury, seeps through such an artistic record.

During the oversaturation and commercialization of Pop Punk in the mainstream, the creativity Punk music ever had greatly diminished. Like most Rock genres, to seek any sort of authenticity, one would have to venture underground in order to find solace. Green Day almost single-handedly saved the genre from perishing in its own stereotypes, while keeping true to its Punk origins. Other albums simply don't employ such a prescient narrative, and suffer from emotional shallowness, ultimately not challenging anything as much as Green Day did, and achieved, as this record. There will never be a true Punk album as epic as American Idiot.

considering youre not underage, how many years have you been a virgin?

It's a good album OP. Some people I think haven't given it a fair listen, and others just have different tastes.
