Carrying my electric guitar to dorm is very painful and tiring since I have other stuff too. The fact that I had to plug in everything every time I just wanted to play a bit also inhibited me from really practicing enough there. Could buying an acoustic that I could leave in the dorm fix this? Otherwise I can only practice at the weekend...

I would recommend practicing unplugged, but some people don't like that. Otherwise get one of those mini audio interface things that allow you to plug your guitar directly into a comp and use headphones. Idk the name for them. i do both these things.

I'm a minimalist when it comes to gear. I've been playing for 2-3 years and I've only got a used strat and a meme CUBE amp. I don't even know anything about acoustic guitars. How much would I have to spend to get something that's not complete trash? I guess 4-500 usd would be my budget. I used a bare converter to plug my guitar into the mic jack and it worked well enough, but I don't want to carry my only guitar back and forth every week.
