I'm going to be studying abroad in Japan for the next three months. What are some suggestions for things that I should/should not do to make sure I don't stand out or offend anyone?

I would like to visit Japan desu. How did it happen that they suddenly developed such a love for western culture in the 1960s and 1970s, which persists even to this day? Especially so soon after Hiroshima, when it would have been understandable if they hated the west and everything it stands for?
can someone explain me why japanese people laugh with "wwwww"? I understand the thing with the 888888 to clap as an onomatopoeia but I don't get the w thing.
