captured the tone, imagery, and atmosphere perfectly but basically made no attempt at transliterating the story and its various thematic concerns to cinema.

Lynch's movie felt like it had good intentions, but ultimately failed because what the fuck are you doing trying to cram a 500 page novel under 2 hours. It's literally a scene-for-scene adaptation of a book, except they dropped all the "unimportant" parts that actually made the book. Paul's transformation into Muad'Dib after the ornithopter crash is the most important chapter of the novel, in the most it's condensed to Kyle MacLachlan looking confused for 5 seconds.

Fremen are muslims. Christians are not the only religion with a concept of Messiah. Paul is called Mahdi, which is literally muslim Messiah.
