There were rumors swirling around last August about Adult Swim remastering the flash files of their older shows into HD (similar to what South Park did) or replacing the existing broadcast copies of show with transfers from the original master tapes and launching their own nostalgia block a la The Splat (which airs classic Nick shows on TeenNick). Now it looks like it's come true.
This is good timing for Adult Swim. Nostalgia is big these days. Lots of reboots and remakes in tv and movies. TeenNick created a late night block dedicated to airing older Nicktoons. MTV Classic recently launched featuring old music videos and MTV shows like Beavis and Butthead and Daria etc. Nick at Nite has come back into the late night cable ratings game with a vengeance. Even sister network TBS has seen that decades old reruns of "Friends" and "Seinfeld" are as consistent as they ever were.
Now look at Adult Swim. It's ratings in 2016 were down from the year before, which was down from the year before that. A lot of longtime Adult Swim fans are miffed over how the stagnant and overwrought with FOX reruns the schedule has become in recent years. Not only that, but many were disappointed that last year, Adult Swim not only did nothing for April Fools, but nothing for it's 15th anniversary as well. This is why Adult Swim has finally gone the way of nostalgia night aka a sort-of revival of the 2008 "oldschool fridays" (though only 1 hour instead of 4 hours).
And it's not like the shows they're airing have done THAT poorly in ratings. Brak, Sealab, and Harvey Birdman all had multiple episodes with over 1 million viewers last time they ran in the 4 AM "DVR Theater" slot.
True, Space Ghost has returned to weeknights at 1:15 AM, and, for the first week, has gotten average ratings of 712,000 viewers (700 + 750 + 734 + 664). This is certainly down from what that timeslot usually gets, but not outside of the normal range. Adult Swim even aired a bump after these episodes the first week saying something to the effect of "Even if we don't win the ratings tonight we want to thank you for being a loyal viewer and we're proud of the way you watched". However, if the ratings dip in the coming weeks, it will probably be moved into the 4 AM DVR Theater slot.
