I just binged the first episode and god NPH is horrible as Count Olaf. Nothing compared to Jim Carrey. Does NPH get any better later on in the series?

Fuck off he's much better than Jin "le zany faces" Carey.
The series in general is much more compelling and vivacious than the book.
NPH has absolute no range at all as Count Olaf. No emotion at all.
you are fucking high. this series is terrible on its own and even worse as an adaptation.
you can meme all you want about jim carrey, but he nailed olaf. niel patrick harris doesn't have the range to do anything other than barney stinson ripoffs.
i am so utterly disappointed in this show it's unreal.
>NPH
That's not how you spell Jim Carey.
I bought the second episode from TPB, enjoyed it, so I bought the rest. I laugh here and there.
also best Violet coming trough
NPH would school all the people in this thread in an acting competition
It's better than the movie was.
But yeah, I'd really like a decent adaption, the setting and style in the books is fucking great.
>Non-actors cannot criticize an actor
you're joking right
>better than the movie
i dunno about that m80. the third act was really rushed. if they had split it into three or four movies, it would have been as big as the hunger games. i thought it was excellent and tonally consistent with the books. this netflix shit is like gilmore girls and reddit had a young adult novel baby. shit is cancer.
>acting competition
what kind of reality do you reside in?
Why did Netflix cast a 13 year old girl to play a 14 year old character? Also Louis Hayes (Klaus) is 15 but was supposed to be 12 in the show??
>Why did Netflix cast a 13 year old girl to play a 14 year old character?
That's a silly question, user. If she's good enough for the role, a single year isn't going to be that make the depiction that less believable.
>I just binged the first episode
For anyone who actually thinks NPH is better than Jim Carrey, watch this.
youtu.be
...but shes not good in the role. bitch cant act
OP how do you "binge" one episode?
welcome to Sup Forums friendo
I thought he was the best part of the show desu.
Then that's a more valid criticism.
Since I'm such a nice guy, I'm not going to call you a newfag and say that confused me as well when I first saw that. It's a meme or practice to arbitrarily replace "watch" with "binge," or "marathon."
While I wasn't the biggest fan of his Olaf either (too much Barney Stinson in it IMO), I found him more enjoyable once he starts with the disguises. At least so far.
Literally anyone can be an actor. Just do some community theater, shill a few thousand dollars for a headshot picture, fill out a bio, and then do a lot of tryouts. Skill doesn't even matter.
>watch show
>love it
>come to Sup Forums
>everyone hates it
wtf
not a bad show, but things definitely bring it down
i don't think anyone has an issue with patrick warburton as snicket, despite being a different interpretation than the movie
More like "A Series of Unfortunate Miscasts"
Even then, I don't love it. I think the only thing everyone agrees was basically perfect was the crew of henchmen, who were all hugely entertaining.
Is this something only americans can enjoy? my little sister made me watch the movie with jim carrey and i nearly blew both of our brains out. I just think I was always too intelligent for this, even as a young child. what is the appeal here?
Deadpan henchman is remarkably fun
It's for kids who felt smarter than all of their peers. It indulged both their certainty that their large vocabulary was worth something and their lurking suspicion that the world was really quite awful. It's basically Pynchon for kids.
I'm sure kids who read these are smarter than people who read Harry Potter novels.
I'm sure you were very precocious, user
I thought the other way around. However, I'm not watching any more since it is just white people whining about how shitty life is.
>white people whining
What's the significance of their race?
Anyone here has Yeezys replicas for sale?
saw the thumbnail in the catalog and thought this was terry malick
lmao
I thought I was the only one who truly noticed that
Sup Forums, Sup Forums or reddit?
NPH is pretty stupid as Olaf. He never feels threatening or creepy.
>boogeyman, boogeyman or boogeyman
kys you underaged fuck
lmao which one are you then?
Just stop posting.
"no"
Why did they insist this show is bleak and depressing but in reality its just a Tim Burton zany """""drama"""""
>Hurr look away! Its too depressing guise!
>If you want a happy ending or any happiness better turn this off xD
I know the actual books are more saddening and bleak but why doesn't Hollywood make it like it's supposed to?
>you just miss jim carey
haven't seen the original movie, nor have I read the books. NPH is wooden, and his movements are small. Odd, considering he was in the theatre.
I'm taking it for what it is, a more complete telling of Unfortunate Events, but with different actors. It's almost like a live action cartoon.
The books start off bleak, what with the parents dying, but then get pretty silly once the formula is established.
It's only around the halfway point when Olaf frames the kids and they spend the rest of the series on the run that shit starts getting really, oppressively dark and bleak.
there are a lot of literary references that would go over most kids heads. I wouldn't say its the most intelligent child book series ever. But defiantly better than most like Harry Potter for instance
What are you talking about? It's legitimately about nothing but bad things happening to these kids. Sure, it's a dark comedy, but they don't ever actually get a happy ending.
I don't get the Carey hate. The man is highly talented and works like a maniac. Nothing but respect for him.
how did josephine actress get hired, shes fucking awful, like a high school drama class tier
Why does reddit pretend this guy was a good choice?
He's a flaming effeminate faggot who can't act for shit. I watched a couple of episodes and he fails to bring the character to life.
Reminder that Daniel Handler is a hack.
Who would have been a better actor for it?
Anybody else like Warburton channeling Rod Serling as Snicket? It felt really out of place at first, but ended up growing on me.
They should have had Steve Buscemi play him.

Anyone else thought their chemistry wasn't sibling like?
It's been a very long time since I've read the books, but was Olaf always a goofy sort of character? I remember him as much more reserved and sinister.
what lol
did you see the same movie as me
They definitely play up the goofiness here compared to the books. I'm hoping it will be gradually downplayed as he gets up to more and more heinous shit over the course of the series.
I prefer his more comedic portrayal desu, it brings down the serious pedophilic tones
Find me any middle aged, tall, lanky guy with a sinister demeanor and that would be a better choice.
Then by the end they're hardened and world-weary and Olaf dies and tells them they don't know anything
Also, I got the feeling that Snicket is a somewhat unreliable narrator - like, Olaf is a bad guy, but Lemony is supposed to absolutely hate him for personal reasons, and may be exaggerating how awful he is.
He gets humanized towards the end at least
Do you have a hall pass?
>but why doesn't Hollywood make it like it's supposed to?
It's very difficult to capture that on film. The books already rode the line between legitimately dire, to sardonic and eccentric. The movie and this series is like a darker Pee Vee's Playhouse.
that's violet?? she looks like a three year old
you're joking right
Jesus christ
this movie was legitimately scary
>binging only one episode
I don't think that word means what you think it means.
You binge watched an entire episode? Wow.
reddit needs to leave
Are you saying it was like they were *more* than siblings?
OP why are you so defensive?
I think both Olaf's are great. Though I do enjoy Jim Carrey's more. I honestly only wish the nickelodeon movie carried onward to the end.
You cannot binge a single episode. Binge watching is when you sit and watch multiple episodes or an entire season in 1 day.
Is this a meta meme? That's the joke, bingeing a single episode.
They come off like they're strangers. Never feel close or bond like what siblings do
I thought both of the kids were pretty shit in general, MUCH better kid actors in the movie.
Being this fucking new..
I always liked the idea of Lemony being an unreliable narrator, but then I don't know what to do with it from there. I mean all his prophecies come true, i.e. "This character wasn't dead, yet." And then they die later.
Well the whole idea is he is chronicling the plight of the Baudelaires in-universe. So he knows what happened and will tell as much, but he still has his own biases that he can't help but inject into the story and is personally invested on some level.
He's not that unreliable, he's still relating the facts. But he's filling in the dialogue himself, based on what he knows about the situation and the characters, and he's not unbiased.
His biases never made him seem like an unreliable narrator to me. He hates Olaf, but Olaf does turn out to be a murderer and all around piece of shit
This is literally my first time here and I want to thank you for explaining that.
I like to think of the quirky dialogue as less a comment on the wacky society the Baudelaires live in and more a testament to the unique personality of Lemony Snicket as he recreates it.

Sorry bro not everyone has autism.
Careful. The memes are so thick here it's like another language. Study them, or suffer the wrath of the autists.
>autism
Well you made a decent effort, but not good enough. Keep lurking, faggot.
Teenage Emily Browning was my first waifu.
He played the creepy parts alright.
Sorry bro only literal autists fall for the lurking meme.
I've only watched 6 episode but he kills 3 people, chases the kids with a knife, fools all the adults and manages to always get away. How the fuck is that not threatening especially if you're a powerless kid? Tired of seeing this shit opinion keep getting parroted in these threads.
...
Just because he does those things doesn't mean he appears threatening. It's to the shows detriment that he is able to do all of those things and still be absolutely unthreatening.
Noone is saying Olaf isn't a murderous scumbag, just that he's probably not the mustache twirling 100% evil demon in human form he comes off as in the books.
I mean we know two things about the relationship between Olaf and Snicket
1 Olaf probably bullied him when they were in school
2 Olaf then turned around and fucked Snickets sister
And we know one thing about Snicket himself. He's a pathetic and cowardly man who chose to let others sacrifice themselves to stop Olafs plans and the only reason he's around to "write the books" is because he was hiding while everyone else actually tried to do something.
