The baltics are richer now than they were under Soviet occupation, because they got rid of some of the corruption. The other ex-USSR states didn't, which is why they are very poor and their economy is in the shitter.
The EU member states have very little corruption, almost all of the corruption in the EU is situated in the EU organization. Destroying this organization will bring tremendous growth and wealth to European citizens.

The idealogies are completely different for one thing. The former USSR nations, before they were absorbed into the union, were largely kingdoms and feudal states.there was never a democratic or capitalist foundation.
The EU nations, on the other hand, have strong financial backbones that favor and pretty much founded democracy and capitalism.
