They only do it when they're around other women AFAIK. I think it's their way of asserting dominance without access to the male traits of verbal banter or physical power. They might be demonstrating to each other (or to potential mates) that they're comfortable with a lack of boundaries. Something that might be intimidating to another woman, or appealing to a man.
