I'm an autist when it comes to perfecting my tracks.
I've spent the last hour automating and mixing a ingle background Tom thats plays twice.
Jose Ortiz
Form of procrastination to not finish the track or do anything worthwhile
Austin Morgan
how do you avoid it? whats your workflow like?
Levi Flores
I disagree. I've always been obsessed with every sound in a song.
I know I should obsess less but I love how I can pay attention to every little sound in a song. It's cool.
Do you ever get annoyed because something just sounds off? Although you may not be sure exactly why it does?
John Morris
>He doesn't program with all the parameters on random lfos, rendering 100 versions and compiling the best one from them
Ethan Collins
I like my women like I like my hi hats. Tight and sharp.
Yeah, I noticed. I'm thinking of rewriting to allow for starting both from left and right, to increase the chances of getting a decent number of samples, since there seem to be so many missing pages.
As someone already pointed out in a previous thread, the single digit ones will probably end up appearing multiple times. I'm considering removing them but for now the problem hasn't appeared yet, so I don't want to reduce our sample pool for a problem that might not even ever appear.
What do you guys think? Any suggestion? Is pic related good?
Yes I think his scores are sometimes lazy (especially for Dunkirk last year, I can't believe they nominated him) but still there's some stuff to learn from him.
Christian Price
It varies of course- I *do* most often spend a good amount of time making sure the base of the song is solid (unless I'm rushing to get the idea out quick) but after ten minutes I don't keep fucking with eq or compression, or spend more time drawing in velocity and time difference beyond 4 bars- "solid" in the writing stage means good but not great.
If the sound is the song (industrial experimental etc) then yeah I spend more time. I think you know if you're doing that though
I obsess all the time, the moment you realize it's preventing you from finishing the song it's a problem. Get as close as you can and don't linger. Fail faster make sure not to linger quantity over quality.
Nathan Cooper
what do you do when what you are working on implies some potential but you cant seem to lure it out?
Juan Gray
I admit it's not that good and scrap it
The best songs I've ever made were pretty much done within a day. Sometimes just an hour or two
If it's an "average" not shit song that I just kind of push through over a few days or week I don't waste time trying to perfect it- I bounce it into a folder once it's done if I just like it for some reason or I keep thinking that it could have potential and I'm just not good enough to expand on the idea. It's rare to actually go back and think it was really good. Mostly it's just being stuck in the moment and not realizing it's bad and forced
Andrew Roberts
Free sample roulette is a cool idea, but last time it seemed like not many people were discussing it or giving feedback. It kind of felt like a waste of time to work on a song using only 3 shitty samples and then to get no feedback.
Aaron Ramirez
Because it's just gimmicky desu
Sebastian Bell
I tried listening to some of them to give feedback, but I didn't know what to say since they were mostly so low effort. I asked one of them how he did some of his sounds and the thread died before he responded.
This time I'll try saying something (hopefully meaningful) to each one.
Jason Johnson
kinda sounds low energy
Benjamin Foster
No this is all too complicated, nobody can be bothered searching through 15 different addresses just to get the samples. Just find 8 samples and post them in the OP.
Nathaniel Morales
I wanna get into modular synths. I know it'll cost a lot but I'm planning to save up over the next few years because I'm pretty broke/starving musician.
How much do you guys think he spent on a system like this to make sounds so clear as this? youtube.com/watch?v=BD_uBLfysz0 (Bass sounds so good on sub, synths are so clear)
He named three of his items, and god I know nothing but the three amounted to under less than 1,000, which isn't that bad considering how expensive (yet expansive) software synths are that don't produce this same quality.
Nathan Jones
It should first and foremost be a challenge for yourself - Here's some random sounds, now what can you create. Feedback is nice, but focus on making something truly creative you will learn more about sampling and developing unique ideas than you would with pre-selected samples, for example.
Lincoln Edwards
the samples that user said are literally the first post ITT. Those are the valid samples.
Sebastian Taylor
>the problem hasn't appeared yet I retract my statement. freesound.org/s/7 has already appeared last time, and with the new left/right rule it's going to appear again until the post count doesn't reach 80000000 (at which point it's going to be this freesound.org/s/8 for a long time).
Is pic related good?
But the randomness of it is one of the main points. This way we avoid arguing over sample choice, and it allows for anyone to just post the image in the thread with the already sorted samples in the same post (since they'd come from the OP).
Ideally the one that posts the image and starts the challenge should find the samples and post the links in the thread (as it's been done in the past roulettes) so the other Anons don't have to do anything but click on the links and download them. Perhaps we could even upload them on zippyshare or similar, so there's no need to make an account on freesound either.
Why dont you just progressively go through every sample and call it a day, from 1 to 8, 8 to 16, etc, OPs or first posters job to remember to update the number
William Ortiz
Anyone got a download for the Slate VMR with the FG-Stress and FG-Monster?????
i want to start producing Porn Soundtracks, what you guys recommend, what vsts, im on Reaper btw
Jason Miller
Can't argue with that. I just kind of wanted to know if I was doing it right or totally missing the point. I mangled the samples until they were mostly unrecognizable and then used them like traditional instruments. Not sure if that's missing the point of the challenge or not.
Leo Hill
How is that better? We'd still have to sift through all the deleted sounds, OP can mess up with the counting, and we'd still have a similar list of samples to download. Not to mention how for the first years we'd only have extremely old sounds, while with the current system we get a random mixture.
Literally only downsides for no upsides.
Elijah Myers
I did the same last time but then regretted it.
You can do whatever you want, as long as you experiment and try doing something cool, but I feel that turning them into traditional instruments is kind of a shortcut because while it lets you practice/flex your sound design, it basically skips the sampling aspect, so this time I'll try a bit of both.
Lincoln King

78621 and 7862 have been uploaded by the same person with a 4 year distance, yet one has the same number as the other, but with a "1" after. What kind of coincidence is this?
A *good* sample encourages one kind of song. Hence a billion different rappers sampling the same fucking soul songs for two decades; animals and field recordings becoming ambient so on so on
Actually making something new through granular/crazy sample mangling bypasesses any notion of gimmicks and novelty that people use to seek out praise when they do shit like sample video games. If you just go ahead and do something crazy nobody is going to recognize they were samples in the first place
Ik already people will be pissed off by that thinking, but genuinely "creative" and also recognizable sampling depends on actually having a good sample and using it in a novel way, not getting creative with utter shit
Brody Ward
That was my /fsr/ track. I made the sound I believe you were referring to by transposing the sample down (freesound.org/s/7/), and looping it almost every bar. Added some reverb with ValhallaRoom and panning with Utility, tweaked Ableton's simpler a tiny bit. Nothing fancy. Sound is on the orange track.
oh the issue is deleted sounds? i thought it was an out-of-bounds thingy
>Not to mention how for the first years we'd only have extremely old sounds whats bad about that? forces a different sound, on the other hand you have an unrelated mix of different sounds that will end up sounding like whatever you are into sounding at the moment
Bentley Miller
But nobody cares about making a hit record with a FSR. It's just an exercise to see what we can do with what we have.
If you ONLY want to make the best possible songs, then don't partecipate. We want to do it to learn and to have fun playing a musical game together. If it ends up sounding bad or being unrecognizable nobody will care. You don't have to post it on your soundcloud. It can just be between us if you want to.
It's all about the process, not the result.
Alexander Young
anyone?
Isaiah Jones
>forces a different sound It's not sounds from the 80's or 90's or something. It's from fucking 2005. It's not "a sound". Just low quality. Also it's the same sound for every sample every time. What's the point in adding such a feature to the game?
Grayson Ward
You are missing the point. The samples arent shit, theyre completely unique and dont mesh with eachother. But they are still samples and can be molded in any way you'd like.
Besides, if you dont want to participate you can ignore it entirely. Continue using your vengeance sample pack 200
Nathaniel Harris
>It's from fucking 2005 >It's not "a sound". Just low quality. so its like post-lofi >Also it's the same sound for every sample every time. i dunno man i just think that going the random way you just end up with a mishmash of stuff you simply process in your way and call it a day, its like a low effort version of chosing samples by yourelf, like grabbing random shit from a sample folder
Neat, thank you for following up on the explanation.
Blake Sanchez
>so its like post-lofi Yeah, let's make a roulette with sounds that would be fine in this one shitty gimmicky genre only, for absolutely no reason.
>i dunno man i just think that going the random way you just end up with a mishmash of stuff you simply process in your way and call it a day It's up to you if you want to be lazy about it. Part of the fun is to make them sound cohesive and good.
>its like a low effort version of chosing samples by yourelf, like grabbing random shit from a sample folder Why low effort? I spent several hours on mine last time, and I will this time too. You put the effort you want to put in.
I used to do a thing in the past called iron chef of music where we took a random sample and could only use that to create a song in an hour or so how about the person that makes these threads picks 5-8 random numbers in between like 1 and the number of the most recently uploaded sample to select samples? and if that sample is deleted, just reroll that one number?
Aaron Reyes
do what I do and use samples repeatedly to meet different goals pull small slivers of a waveform out of a vocal passage, tweak those to make your percussion, then use the vocal sample as a whole on top
Jaxon Cook
>how about the person that makes these threads picks 5-8 random numbers in between like 1 and the number of the most recently uploaded sample to select samples? and if that sample is deleted, just reroll that one number? Wouldn't that yield the same result as what we already have, but also allowing the OP to cheat by picking the samples himself? The current system ensures that everyone can be sure about it being random.
Ryan Walker
picking random numbers instead of using the post number fixes the issue of having repeated samples I'm not sure that "cheating" would be that big of an issue honestly
Ryan Morris

does any one use soundtoyz? i have the sound toyz little alter boy and i experimented and put it on a drum track and it distorted and it, what seems like, hyper compressed it making it sound faster, more aggressive and giving it a bounce to the beat. only problem is it phases the track. i want to recreate that effect but i get no results from distorting and compression. i can't seem to recreate that fast pace aggressive effect. any tips?
Evan Green
you need to put your drums in mono or else it will do that with alter boy
Just finished last night. Attempt at dark synthpop sort of stuff. Any suggestions/abuse welcome, especially about the vocal mix.
Lincoln King
vocals could be clearer. hard to differentiate between the samples talking and vocals. mixing overall could be improved. I dislike the hihat sample. drums could have more punch and be slightly more interesting. the main distorted melody sounds a bit out of place. should add a new, different section to keep the track interesting at some point throughout. just one guys opinion though. i like it though keep at it.
Thanks for the feedback. When you say mixing overall, anything in particular I should listen for? I'm still getting to grips with how things should be sounding. I'll have a play with the drums and tone down the effects on the vocals, or maybe swap the effect chain over to the sample instead.
More like form of avoiding growing as a writer or even an engineer or producer. People who autistically obsess over sounds like that almost always make bad music. They think the time spent to make a track = better.
Gavin Young
Mmmm I agree about the time thing but if you're working on a final product or making intricate/sound design based music it takes time

You're so fucking bad at that meme just stop posting
Austin Bennett
Idk. is a fun way to explore music.
Dylan Cook
no opinions?
Gavin Long
I mean I like the low drone thing and the trashy sample (haven't checked the roulette)
Other than that it's just boring man, nothing going on
Also it's night and you left it up for like 20 minutes don't be so quick to beg for listens- have some pride :p
Owen Sanchez
it's morning here xD thanks for feedback man
Christopher Morris
Needs more work. The track feels empty. I would ad some high pitched chopped and randomized amen break. Some shouts/spoken word and industrial samples in places.
Aaron Walker
But don't listen to me. I would do it to any track. XDD
Jason Cooper
yeah... that's right... i'll work more on it thanks man

High key terrible ideas lmfao
Jackson Rodriguez
Don't judge my taste. There is an audience for it somewhere.
I actually wonder about the stats on that bandcamp
Anthony Cook
How do you make sustains from sampled instruments not sound like shit or click? Even with constant volume bass I get weird artifacts.
Adrian Diaz
so guys thanks for feedbacks i worked more on it and i think it got better (i found out i missed some samples last time too) clyp.it/1ojxvwdh
Nathan Evans
>Deathgrips rmx I think compositionally it lacks faster parts. Otherwise sounds awesome. No amen for me. :(
Jose Wilson
>Deathgrips rmx lol xD yeah... i never could make faster beats. either tried or gave up. now might be a good time to try again where's the "amen" sample? i didn't find it
Nathaniel Smith
>so uncreative that he cannot for the life of him think of a way to sample it in an interesting way You are an autistic retard raging over nothing you tit.
Gabriel Wilson
Just search for clean amen break. There are bunch of them on fs.
