Me and my friends occasionally have movie nights using my hdd which has 700+ kinos on it.

One time a friend brought his gf 'cause he has no respect for lads night. She couldn't understand that I had so many films and wanted to just watch netflix. We ended up watching Army of Darkness and she kept saying shit like "this move's so weird" & "what is this movie even lol".

I think HTPCs are antiquated and that roku/fire/android boxes are awesome.

But with the fact that we now run small low powered things on our TV, you need a good NAS or server setup elsewhere unless you are just running Netflix or something.

Like running a Plex server, you need some CPU power to transcode videos. Its transcoding feature is what makes Plex worth dealing with all of its retarded and annoying problems.

I run an USFF PC with a haswell i5 16gbs ram and can run 4 concurrent transcodes at once.
I only have given my server out to a handful of people so its not a problem, also most of the time it wont be transcoded anyways.

most NAS setups dont have the CPU power to transcode Plex for more than 1 person, which kind of defeats the whole purpose of the server.

It entirely depends on what box you are running, especially because the MKV container can vary so greatly with how it is encoded.

I know that for example I have a TV with native Roku support that cant run AVIs so they need transcoded.

Plex even looks like Netflix, most normies literally wont be able to tell a difference besides color scheme and it actually having a movie she might want to see.

a major downside to that is that regarding new movies youre interested in, you'll have to settle for HDcam quality rather than DVD/BR, or wait a few months and probably forget you wanted to watch it.

I'm not sure if it's powerful enough to set up so that another devices on the network could view material (a tablet/phone) as all the other PCs in the house can simply browse to the directories and play as is.

Beyond the access a netflix subscription would add I don't know why people would choose any other option (excluding people who don't have large collections already).

Because our net is slow, even streaming takes time to buffer (enjoy waiting 5 minutes each time you seek). Oh the drive side of things I like to archive. The drives are not an issue to me, yes they fail, but so far it's been years after I've moved from 2->4->6s. Drives do not just randomly drop dead as often, if they are simple storage devices without 100% active time it will last 5~ years easily. I have many 2008 WD greens that are still going and reporting nothing wrong. I don't understand the way people download (stream) stuff and then abandon it, you've spent the bandwidth to buffer and subsequently watch it, so keep it.

If the service you're using isn't a buffer type, then you're still at the mercy of 'this is no longer available in your region'.
