It still built great buildings while the rest of Europe was making mud huts. The renaissance occurred because of Byzantine nobility fleeing the ottoman.
So why the hatred? While eastern Europe held the flood of the shitskin from the south of the Muslims and the north the golden horde. Western Europe backstabbed eastern Europe. The fourth crusade invaded Constantinople and sacked it. So this jealousy of the superiority and the fact of western Europe protecting eastern Europe. Twisted the mind of western Europe. While the west had to forgoe it's own enlightenment to protect its borders the western Europeans did not feel any gratitude towards the east.
