Is it necessary to learn songs on guitar to get better? I dont feel like spending so much time memorizing the tab. I would rather learn the fundementals.

you're on the right track. theory knowledge is a lot more useful than just knowing how to play songs you like. if you want to write your own stuff i'd recommend just diving straight in.
it's useful to know about genre specific things though, or things that your favorite guitarists/songwriters do if you're trying for a certain sound.
wow that image is an epic win to be honest xD
Never use tab or notation
Only learn songs by ear
worthwhile if you can be bothered/have the patience. having a good ear is very valuable.
Depends what you mean by better. But the best way to learn guitar is to simply sit and play it and spend as much time doing that to the extent of your enjoyment. Theory and lessons are good points of reference to know how to talk about what you're doing, but as far as playing goes fucking do whatever you want lol
Learning songs might help you develop your ear for musicality. In other words, you might pick up on certain patterns or ideas in other people's music that you like and then be able to incorporate those things into your own songwriting. That being said, it's definitely helpful to take time away from listening to music to develop things like technique (through exercises and practicing patterns) and music theory knowledge (reading theory books and articles online, watching YouTube videos on applied music theory).
I would recommend dividing your practice schedule into two sections. Spend the first few minutes of practice working on a technique or practicing scales or chords or whatever, then maybe find a song you really like to work on. The song you choose doesn't need to be anything complicated if you don't feel like you're there yet, maybe just something you'll want to keep in your back pocket to bust out at a random jam session. I used to host an open jam at a bar and I learned a bunch of '90s alt. rock, classic rock, and R&B tunes so that everyone could jam along with something; this helped me get more comfortable playing in different keys (a lot of R&B and soul tunes are written in Eb/Ab/Bb major which aren't SUPER common in rock music) and developed my ear for the licks that make up a lot of musical vocabulary (especially learning Hendrix tunes). And I feel like I'm now able to channel a lot of that experience into my own music.
Is there a youtube playlist of the best guitar tutorials?? Would be awesome if someone could show me the best videos that are understandable to beginners.
Who the hell wants to learn an instrument without learning songs? I really don't understand millennials. By the way, fundamentals should take you a few weeks to learn in the first place.
Learn scales before anything else. Start with major, minor, and blues scales
I want to learn the instrument to make my own songs. I realized i wasnt inspired by any particular guitarist to learn. Just the sound of guitar in general.
So heres the thing: i memorized all scales and now im trying to use them to solo but it just sounds shitty.
copying good riffs is the quickest way to get good. having a basic/moderate understanding of theory will help a lot, but going further than that is unnecessary.
Not necessarily, but if you want to play a certain genre listening and learning songs from said genre will help you understand the structure of that kind of genres songs, and just learning a lot of songs in general will help you understand music more
Either that, or learn a song by ear rather than tab, because a good ear is one of the best things to have as a musician
Don't do this unless you're also learning musical theory and how to USE the scales in improvisation, because just learning the scale by itself will not teach you anything apart from how to play the scale
or you could read actual music like every other instrument
Roman do you post in every guitar thread?
>just learning the scale by itself will not teach you anything apart from how to play the scale
Not that user but wouldn't you agree that scales play a huge part in harmony theory? Scales are not only used for le epic Dragonforce solo, you know.
Hi resident guitar expert here. The first question is why. Why do you want to learn guitar? Sounds like learning to songs others have written isnt a goal, so whats up? Why user? Music to me is the same as getting fit. You need to have some goals. People here are just going to say shit to sound knowledgeable, but no one knows whats best for you with so little information. If you want to just pose with a guitar you can like Johnny Depp does here.
youtube.com
You can see him tell the others he has never heard this song before, but man he looks the part and people prob just assume he is pretty good since he is on stage.
No guitar players need to drop the scales meme. Its why you all suck. Learn arpeggios. Scales are just a blue print to find out the chords in the series. If you dont know how to play a major7 #11 arpeggio or chord, you really dont need to know about the lydian scale. Its like if you dont know how to eat food, you really wont need toilet paper to wipe your ass since you are as good as dead.
>every other instrument
what did you mean by this, you can learn songs by ear on any instrument, it's the better way
This. But also read music because why not
you should at least know how to learn by ear because sometimes the moment arises when you won't be able to get sheet music, a mix of both is best, don't use tabs though that gay
You've got it backwards. It's braindead millennial who just want to play their favourite songs without truly learning the instrument
if you're writing learning the scales is necessary. if you're just noodling/ in some kind of improv jazz group then you should learn arpegios/licks/intervals
Learn barre chords. Easiest way to start writing songs
STOP USING TABS IT WILL DESTROY YOU
Seriously, using tabs as a kid set me back YEARS. Use your fucking ears god damn it, it will be hard at first but you have no idea how grateful you'll be later on. LIsten to shit you like and learn it, try to copy it. That simple.
Reading can be learned in a couple months, ear training takes years.
Stop expecting someone to take you by the hand. You'll only be another mediocre guitarist with that attitude
Tutorials for what? Just playing? I'm far from good at guitar but try www.play.riffstation.com. It helped me so much in the beginning. Search for a song you like and think is easy and it tells you what chord to play at what time while the song is playing. If it's too fast you can turn the tempo down.
