25% of the votes in Germany are now postal votes that lie around for weeks before they are dumped into the urns on election day. They dont get counted seperately from ballot box votes and are open for vote rigging.
The OECD, which is supposed to monitor elections in Europe, has openly criticized this in 2009 and told Merkel to change it, and nothing happened as a result, except that the number of postal votes has doubled.
The elections in 2017 will change nothing, the only option left at this point is a grassroots rebellion.

Somebody has to win. Of course nobody can win alone or in a small coalition, but besides the CDU there isn't a party that has to potential to put up anybody with even the slightest chance.
The entire question is if the go for the conservatives with the CSU and AfD (unlikely) or if they go for SPD, Greens and likely even the Left (death sentence for Germany). If FDP makes it they can fit in in both scenarios.
What happens depends entirely on what wing in CDU/CSU manages to take over once Merkel is gone.
