t. soyboy
Well adjusted, sociable indivuals who use their smiley muscles more than their frowny muscles and dare to like things that they'd want to show to their, waut for it, friends.
Both Hipsters and Millenials are demographics of people who do not spend their money in a predictable or desirable way suitable for sustaining the old hat markets, and are therefore the object of derision. Everyone who shits on these groups is a mindless puppet of corporations.
Subdivision of normies who try desperately hard to not be normies while still gaining praise and admiration from the masses.
people who like pitchfork bands and are really into shit like swans but don't listen to any other shit that ounds even remotely similar to swans partially because they're just not aware of it
“Hipster” is a term co-opted for use as a meaningless pejorative in order to vaguely call someone else’s authenticity into question and, by extension, claim authenticity for yourself.
It serves no conversational function and imparts no information, save for indicating the opinions and preferences of the speaker.
Meanwhile, a market myth has sprung up around the term, as well as a cultural bogeyman consisting of elusive white 20-somethings who wear certain clothes (but no one will agree on what), listen to certain music (no one can agree on this either), and act a certain way (you’ve probably sensed the pattern on your own). One may be quick to coin such interests and garb as "black-rimmed glasses, flannel, and indie music," however said mainstream-avoiding "hipsters" will logically turn down abiding to such a popular consensus, voiding the interpretation null.
You can’t define what “that kind of behavior or fashion or lifestyle” actually is, nor will you ever be able to. That’s because you don’t use “hipster” to describe an actual group of people, but to describe a fictional stereotype that is an outlet for literally anything that annoys you.
The twist, of course, is that if it weren’t for your own insecurities, nothing that a “hipster” could do or wear would ever affect you emotionally. But you are insecure about your own authenticity - “Do I wear what I wear because I want to? Do I listen to my music because I truly like it? I’m certainly not like those filthy hipsters!” - so you project those feelings.
Suffice it to say, no one self-identifies as a hipster; the term is always applied to an Other, to separate the authentic Us from the inauthentic, “ironic” Them.
tl;dr: if you believe hipsters exist, you are a plebeian.

t. hipster
The hipster subculture is stereotypically composed of younger and middle-aged adults who reside primarily in gentrifying neighborhoods.[1][2] It is broadly associated with indie and alternative music and has popularised more esoteric genres such as chill-out, folk, modern rock, pop rock, and post-Britpop. Hipsters also frequently flaunt a varied non-mainstream fashion sensibility, vintage and thrift store-bought clothing, generally pacifist progressive and green political views, veganism, organic and artisanal foods, craft alcoholic beverages, alternative lifestyles, and snobbery. The subculture typically consists of mostly white young adults living in urban areas.[3][4] It has been described as a "mutating, trans-Atlantic melting pot of styles, tastes and behavior".[5]
The term in its current usage first appeared in the 1990s and became particularly prominent in the late 2000s and early 2010s,[6] being derived from the term used to describe earlier movements in the 1940s.[7] Members of the subculture typically do not self-identify as hipsters, and the word hipster is often used as a pejorative to describe someone who is pretentious,[8] overly trendy, or as a stereotypical term that has been reclaimed and redefined by some as a term of pride and group identity.[1][9] Some scholars contend that the contemporary hipster is a "marketplace myth" that has a complex, two-way relationship with the worldview and value system of indie-oriented consumers.[10]
In a 2009 article in PopMatters magazine, Rob Horning asserted that the hipster might be the "embodiment of postmodernism as a spent force, revealing what happens when pastiche and irony exhaust themselves as aesthetics."[11] In a New York Times editorial, Mark Greif states that the much-cited difficulty in analyzing the term stems from the fact that any attempt to do so provokes universal anxiety, since it "calls everyone's bluff".[12]
hipster is just as meaningful a term as soyboy
People who claim to enjoy/like a band because of their aesthetic/image/indie acclaim, etc.
The #1 band I think of is Tumblr girls wearing Swans shirts when I know for a fact none of them are regularly listening to Swans and whose actual listening consits more of normie top 40 hip-hop/r&b with some shit like Brand New thrown in
The words ''Hipster'' and ''Soyboy'' are undefinable, yet imbued with an ineffable metaphysical portent.
>“There exists, for everyone, a sentence - a series of words - that has the power to destroy you. Another sentence exists, another series of words, that could heal you. If you're lucky you will get the second, but you can be certain of getting the first.”

Hipsters are a subculture of men and women typically in their 20's and 30's that value independent thinking, counter-culture, progressive politics, an appreciation of art and indie-rock, creativity, intelligence, and witty banter. The greatest concentrations of hipsters can be found living in the Williamsburg, Wicker Park, and Mission District neighborhoods of major cosmopolitan centers such as New York, Chicago, and San Francisco respectively. Although "hipsterism" is really a state of mind,it is also often intertwined with distinct fashion sensibilities. Hipsters reject the culturally-ignorant attitudes of mainstream consumers, and are often be seen wearing vintage and thrift store inspired fashions, tight-fitting jeans, old-school sneakers, and sometimes thick rimmed glasses. Both hipster men and women sport similar androgynous hair styles that include combinations of messy shag cuts and asymmetric side-swept bangs. Such styles are often associated with the work of creative stylists at urban salons, and are usually too "edgy" for the culturally-sheltered mainstream consumer. The "effortless cool" urban bohemian look of a hipster is exemplified in Urban Outfitters and American Apparel ads which cater towards the hipster demographic. Despite misconceptions based on their aesthetic tastes, hipsters tend to be well educated and often have liberal arts degrees, or degrees in maths and sciences, which also require certain creative analytical thinking abilities.
Consequently many hipsters tend to have jobs in the music, art, and fashion industries. It is a myth that most hipsters are unemployed and live off of their parent's trust funds.
Hipsters shun mainstream societal conventions that apply to dating preferences and traditional "rules" of physical attraction.
It is part of the hipster central dogma not to be influenced by mainsream advertising and media, which tends to only promote ethnocentric ideals of beauty. The concepts of androgyny and feminism have influenced hipster culture, where hipster men are often as thin as the women they date. The muscular and athletic all-American male ideal is not seen as attractive by confident and culturally-empowered hipster women who instead view them as symbols of male oppression, sexism, and misogyny. Likewise, culturally-vapid sorority-type girls with fake blond hair, overly tanned skin, and "Britney Spears tube-tops" are not seen as attractive by cultured hipster males who instead see them as symbols of female insecurity, low self-esteem, and lack of cultural intelligence and independent thinking. Hipsters are also very racially open-minded, and the greatest number of interracial couples in any urban environment are typically found within the hipster subculture.
Although hipsters are technically conformists within their own subculture, in comparison to the much larger mainstream mass, they are pioneers and leaders of the latest cultural trends and ideals. For example, the surge of jeans made to look old and worn, that have become prevalent at stores such as The Gap, American Eagle, Abercrombie and Fitch, and Hollister, were originally paraded by hipsters who shopped in thrift stores years before such clothing items were mass produced and sold to the mainstream consumer. The true irony here is that many of the detractors of hipster culture are in fact unknowingly following a path that hipsters have carved out years before them. This phenomena also applies to music as well, as many bands have become successful and known to mainstream audiences only because hipsters first found and listened to them as early-adopters of new culture. Once certain concepts of fashion and music have reached mainstream audiences, hipsters move on to something new and improved.
definition of Hipster: soynigger
Because of the rise of various online photo-blog and social networking sites, insights into urban hipster culture is reaching sheltered suburban audiences at an exponential rate. Cultural "norms" have been deconstructed by hipster culture as a whole. Hipsterism is often dismissed as just an image thing by some, but the culture as a whole is effecting changes in society, leading to feelings of insecurity and resentment in people who are no longer a part of the cultural ruling class. For example, a lot of anti-hipster sentiment evidently comes from culturally-clueless suburban frat boy types who feel that the more sensitive, intelligent, and culturally aware hipster ideal threatens their insecure sense of masculinity. Anti-hipster sentiment often comes from people who simply can't keep up with social change and are envious of those who can.
A conversation outside a hipster bar in downtown NYC:
Frat Boy #1: Dude, are you having any luck picking up chicks in there?
Frat Boy #2: Man...I haven't experienced anything like this before. These chicks are totally rejecting me and going for all these hipster guys in tight pants and shaggy hair instead.
Frat Boy #1: Maybe we should head back up to that bar in Murry Hill where you hooked up with that drunk b*tch from Alpha Sigma Phi last week?
Frat Boy #2: Yeah...I don't think we have what it takes to compete with these guys in here. These hipster chicks won't even give us the time of the day!
So hipsters were cuckolds before it was "cool"?
Im going to tell you what i think from my point of view.
The original concept of the hipster was a petit bourgeois city person, early 20's late teens, college kid in the mid late 2000's, 98% white.
These people valued the obscure, the weird, the non mainstream.
Fashion wise they originally used to rip off lower class white people(they wan a be like the common people), Flannel shirts, trucker hats, big rim glasses, beard, pabst blue ribbon.
This phase of the hipster lasted from about 2006 to 2013. This is when indie went mainstream. When rock music sold out. You werent supposed to sell out after grunge) They started putting their music in car commercials. Michel cera was government mandated to be in every film, and every film had to be quirky.
This moves into the 2010's when you got the rise of indie pop in the mainstream, I GUESS YOUR JUST SOMEBDY I USEDDD TO KNOW WITH THE PUMPED UP KICKS
Then something happened. This is sometime after obama is elected, rise of dubstep and rap. The hipster goes so far up their ass they start to pretend to like top 40 music. They become poptamists. This is quiet possibly the worst thing to ever happen to music. This has led to years of musical stagnation and mediocrity. I blame p4k being bought by conde nasty. Just an unending hell world of hillary voters yelling "SLAYYYYY BEYONCE"
Well my personal hot take was poptamism died when trump won. Its a complete product of the neoliberal psychosis of the obama era. Cause when you really get down to it poptamism is basically just consmmer capitalism masked as being more open minded and socially liberal.
And so now the hipster, what is the hipster now? It could quiet possibly be on the verge of death.
My other hot take is the hipster parasite might try to become metal heads next.
great insight and I think you've got it spot on.
