While it wasn't worthy of a nomination except for maybe special effects stuff, it was far better than Gravity and The Martian. It was on par with Arrival.

Nolan isn't even half the director Scott is, Interstellar looks drab as fuck compared to the Martian even though the latter is nowhere near as 'serious'.

Yes, and my opinion is that I disagree. Ridley Scott is a hack and The Martian was just a lucky break on a series of shitty movies released one after another, while Nolan is, although playing it safe and and average most of the time, a far better director than him.
