His problem is that: he's a fat, depressing, alcoholic egomaniac. His work is trite and hack, nothing but derivative tropes and references, which he's incredibly aware and ashamed of. No body likes working with them, but they will, because actors and production crew like paychecks. His mistakes this for friendship, but he's a least smart enough to realize it's all fake. It must be sad to wake up everyday wanting to be a creative force, while having no discipline or ability to actually make it happen.
His ability to communicate his shallow ideas are done in his weak voice, and all the people working with him realize this.

1) Most people in the crowd are drunk and/or high
2) It's a live comedy show and people went there to see them. You laugh easier in that situation than you would otherwise.
