Why does it seem that Mogwai never got the same amount of acclaim as the other classic post-rock bands? They have been active for so long but most people barely care about them past their late 90s output.
Why does it seem that Mogwai never got the same amount of acclaim as the other classic post-rock bands...
Proposition: they are simultaneously the most influential post-rock band, and the most underrated
Almost every post-rock band that started past the turn of the century is so indebted to Mogwai that when people working their way through the genre backwards hear Mogwai, they just sound so similar to everything else (especially EITS) that they get overlooked
GYBE, Talk Talk, Slint, Tortoise, Sigur Rós, Bark Psychosis, and Dirty Three all have very specific sounds that produced few innovators, so they end up sounding more unique by comparison, although they probably had less direct influence than Mogwai
>produced few innovators
I meant to say "few imitators"
Young Team is literally on every essential post-rock list ever.
Their albums got worse with each release, like most post-rock bands. The tropes of the genre get stale, comfy as they are.
(OP)
I have to question your premise. They don't get a lot of mention nowadays, but 10 years ago it seems like everyone considered them THE definitive post-rock group.
I guess the reason they're not talked about a lot anymore is because:
1) Post-Rock's popularity has declined dramatically, and
2) Sigur Rós stole their thunder by breaking into the mainstream and becoming a stadium act
I hate the term post-rock. It's non existent. Slint has nothing to do with Sigur rós. Sure, Bark Psychosis and Moonshake were post-rock in the original sense of the word. Now it's just a term for boring drawn out guitar music.
This seems spot on, so many bands copied them they sound generic now
>I hate the term post-rock. It's non existent. Slint has nothing to do with Sigur rós.
That's because you're making the mistake of considering first wave to be "post-rock". Second and third wave has similarities in style and form, meaning they can actually be considered part of the same genre. "first wave" has absolutely nothing to do with post-rock and the fact that they're associated with the genre label shits up any potential discussion of the genre.
The term "post-rock" originates from a Bark Psychosis review though. What's funny is that BP sounds nothing like thise big post-rock bands everyone knows today.
I would like to discuss GY!BE. I've listened to F# A# ∞ and I was disappointed like almost never before. All three songs are harmonically simple and in single key (The Dead Flag Blues - A# minor, East Hastings - A# Aeolian, Providence - Bb minor), in 4/4 time and 120-215 beats per minute progressions throughout songs, although with decent amount of timbre variation. Sadly, not even chromatic passing tones are used and there isn't an improvisational space. I didn't expect such a critically acclaimed band's work to be as simple to analyze. Are their other albums similar in atmosphere? Because that's the only thing they seem to have going for them. Am I going to find a post rock band other than Sigur Ros which wouldn't disappoint me?
I know where it originates from. My problem is that back when it originated it was a completely meaningless buzzword that encapsulated a bunch of different acts that had nothing in common musically, whereas nowadays it's an actual genre label. Yet it's still tied to this non post-rock stuff.
Yes, Sigur ros is just as over the top as GY!BE.
>enjoyment equals to how complex are the compositions
jesus
By the way DFB is F#
You mean bands like Laika, Stereolab, Pram and Seefeel right? They are all weird experiemental rock bands with lots of 70's infuences, I guess that's a similarity. They all "go beyond rock" in a way that they all tried to break down the conventions of 90's rock music by adding avant garde elements.
>enjoyment equals to how complex are the compositions
>jesus
I took the time to analyze what I've listened to and describe what I felt underwhelmed with. Jesus, what? Am I not allowed to have personal taste? I should've said "it's shit" and be done with it.
>By the way DFB is F#
There isn't a just a single scale the notes used in in the song fit in. And F# is just a note.
Because Stuart Braithewait is huge cunt that never has an nice word to say about anything or anybody. Miserable fucker
There's still shitloads of errors. Wanna delete and try again?
>There's still shitloads of errors. Wanna delete and try again?
There's one more "in" than necessary. Are you going to discuss anything and recommend an album?
>I took an entry level music theory class guys, I am now music expert
I'm not trying to compete with anyone, I want to hear post rock albums I'll enjoy. And God forbid anyone has something other than "it's shit" or "it's great" to say about music. Why am I even attempting to have a genuine discussion on this sad excuse for a board?
