As a westerner, I'm conflicted. I love Kpop. It has changed the stereotype and has made Asian men desirable. However, I feel it further infantilizes and objectifies women. (self.kpop)
To preface: I'm a diehard BTS, Red Velvet, Exo, Twice, and CLC fan. I've watched HOURS of music videos, variety shows, compilations, and dance videos learning the world that is Kpop.
As an asian american man in his late 20s, I've applauded Kpop in actually presenting asian men as attractive and desirable. Something that I have not seen in western media throughout my life. However, I feel uncomfortable with how women are treated in the industry. Are there any insights on how to cope with this confliction coming from a western point of view? I know there are distinct cultural differences so perhaps I'm trying to appropriate my ideals.
I sometimes feel ashamed as to why I like girl groups. I do buy into the attractiveness of the cutesy, aegyo aesthetic but it makes me feel uncomfortable as to why I like it.
