meh. I never understood why metalheads were so separate from each other depending on metal genre. There was the BM try hards, the Death Metal stoners, the Goths wearing CoF shirts, the exclusively Power Metal medieval LARPers and there was me, that listened to all those genres and one day wore a Cryptopsy None So Vile shirt, and a Rhapsody shirt the next.

Why do people always act like the first band of the genre is best. For example, there are countless black metal bands out there, some are bound to be superior to Burzum, Mayhem, or Bathory even if they are ''rip offs''

You could say the first bands proved they were ''more genuine'' because they invented, but there's bound to be people out there in this vast world of metal, that were equally as genuine and were just born later. And even that argument doesn't really get into judging the band by it's objective sound

If the first bands made shitty music nobody would have copied them. On the other hand, people who copy others probably don't have a lot of talent and make mediocre music. So "good=original" is true more often than not.

Some bands were actually so good/breakthrough that they started a wave of imitators—hence creating a genre. Speaking of BM, most bands closely follow the same blueprint established by a select few pioneers of the genre. So the comparison is more than fitting
Also, it often happens that the pioneers become poster boys for the genre. In result they attract the biggest following and get most "cred" and authority.
However, I disagree that their followers are "bound" to be better. It takes a great creative force to actually trailblaze a subgenre; some, like Varg and Quorthon, created more than one. But copying, even if done very well, usually doesn't quite attract same level of creative force. They often surpass them in one area, but lack in others.
And actually, if we take DM, there are plenty bands who were the "first" in DM (see Master for example) and yet they don't really get praised all that much. Possessed could be the first (maybe with Sepultura's Morbid Visions), but hardly anyone would call them THE best.
