What? Seems fine to me.
No prog metal album should have a rating about 3/5 desu
Fuck off you dumb fucks.

juden
this you, OP?
>metal
haha
idk how we let a Dream Theater album got above a 3.4
RYM is about projecting an image. Admitting you like Dream Theater is like wearing cargo shorts + a fedora.
dream theater is fucking trash. i was so confused the first time i saw that album with such a high score. ban plebs from rym pls
>a relatively niche album from a relatively niche genre is less popular than one of the most popular albums from what is currently one of the most popular genres
wow
>Dream Theater youtu.be
Reminder this is what you're defending

i never said anything about low end theory
i'm totally indifferent to that album. dream theater still sucks tho. theyre like tool mixed with 50 cans of canned cheese
What's the problem? Seems fine to me.
This post is not attacking Dream Theater. It's just saying that the RYM userbase sees bands like DT as uncool, so they give the album lower ratings. In fact, in OP's pic you also see that ATCQ album has almost twice as many ratings; it's just what's popular in there.
it's called sampling user
maybe you'd know about it if you didn't live under the rock that hides the portal to the world where metal is an acceptable thing to like
It's a better work of art you faggot. That's not Dream Theater's best or even second best.
Tribe is one of my least favorite hip hop acts, but holy shit OP Dream Theater is one of the cringiest fucking prog acts ever, jesus christ. You could've picked nearly anyone to make this argument and you chose the ultimate fedoracore, lmao.
>dream theater literally samples entire lines from movies and puts it into their music
indefensible
>2 non-problems in a row.
Neat.
>Tribe is one of my least favorite hip hop acts,
What are your favorites?
>ATCQ
>Dream Theater
>art
>unironically listening to dream theater
Just end it
>unironically a grimescuck in charge of deciding what is art and what is not
Music is art. What's the surprise here?
I barely listen to hip hop, but probably Raekwan, Wutang, and Denzel Curry desu. I'm entry level as fuck, I just hate q-tips voice lol.
grimescuck at least understands the worth of dream theater's output
i remember being 16 once
Reminder
OP here. I'm writing something. So wait and i'll explain this.
Try out Digable Planets.
can you at least listen to good prog metal?
Okay. To every fellow homosapien in this thread. I would @ you all but that would be kind of forced attention getting.
What you're looking at thread about my confusion and some what frustration of what RYM (and proving by this thread, most people) believe to be the "superior" piece of music. Or rather, what they like more or something. Who cares. Point is you're looking at two albums.
>Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory
and
>The Low End Theory
As you can see here. Low End is beating Metropolis by a landslide. Almost double the ratings and score. By this merit. The music should be amazing.....um..........
I'm going to show an example of two songs.
The Dance Of Eternity
youtube.com
and
Vibes and Stuff
youtube.com
I'm going to analyze both song. Starting with Dance.
youtube.com
youtube.com
According to the DT wiki.
>The Dance of Eternity is often regarded as one of the most complex songs in progressive metal.
And easily so, it contains TONS of time signatures. Time Signatures are notational convention used in Western musical notation to specify how many beats (pulses) are to be contained in each measure (bar) and which note value is equivalent to one beat. 4/4 being the most common. Counting a simple
>1...2...3...1...2...3...4
Is really easy. But if you look at the videos posted. They change so much. They play more odd time signature than 4/4. And it's not something that anybody can easily do and make it sound amazing and steady. It requires full music and body control. Not only is this written by classical trained people. But people who can control the music and mind so their souls content. Not only is it a complex and amazing piece. But it fits with the story of the album. You can listen to read up on. But so far, This songs proves to be
>Well written
>Well execuded
>Made by people with years of blood sweat and tears
cont-
>MUH TIMSIGNITURES
I wrote my comp final in 11/8, 13/8, and 5/4, does that mean I'm better than Dream Theater?
jesus christ
this is an embarassing post
>falling for the complex is better meme
I understand it's complex music. Now explain me why a piece being complex means it's good.
it's not even fucking complex desu, any later coltrane work blasts it's asshole. DT just uses le funky time signatures with the most basic bitch chord changes possible and progfags go gaga.
All of this has literally nothing to do with how good the music is because difficulty of composition and performance doesn't impact quality. For example, if you found out that your favorite song was composed by someone falling down a staircase of synthesizers and recording the output, would you suddenly like it less? If you answer yes, congratulations, you don't enjoy that music but the image it projects.
here op
let me show you an actual prog metal band that isn't just cheesy "muh mixed meter" power metal
is this pasta?
holy fuck I need more, this is amazing
Because complexity unleashes more meaning than simplicity. It challenges the audience and manipulates them into more emotions, states, mindframes and sentiments than minimalistic/simplistic music. You might think that having one mood and doing it well is great enough, but virtually anyone can do such a thing in art. The truly special ones, the ones that significantly stand out from the rest, those are the ones who masterfully display the cornucopia of emotion while culminating such moods into actual depth. That's a fragment of what makes music such a compelling art. In fact, the whole essence of music as an artistic form of expression is to extract emotion for listeners to resonate with. Every true musician, artist, and band creates music with the sole intention of conveying emotions via the message and meaning of the song, so people could either contemplate how it relates to their intrinsic existence as a human, or regard a song as jovial fun and exuberance. In fact, art is what happens when dreams transcend our existence into a state of emotion we've never, or have yet to experience in our daily lives. Fantasies about the wand levitating the orbs to their sockets in order to unlock that marrow staircase to the door of lies is art. A sword that heals death lives in art. The palms of deities providing eternal slumber is art. Art is what happens when you learn to dream.
Dreamers believe in grandiosity.
-not OP, new to this thread.
Even Grimes is better than DT.
t. someone who has never gone to music school
>Because complexity unleashes more meaning than simplicity. It challenges the audience and manipulates them into more emotions, states, mindframes and sentiments than minimalistic/simplistic music
youtu.be
reminder that this is objectively better and more emotional than most music out there (including dream theater)
Now.......to A Tribe Called Quest......ugh fine okay.
I'll get to the pic i posted soon.
Vibes and Stuff (stupid title btw) is the 7th track off Low End.
Listening at first hand. It's a very pleasant 4/4 starting at a nice G next to a B flat.
G and B are note names btw.
The whole song is based on repetition. The first measure is the same for the whole song with no actual change besides the rapper.
My first thoughts about the song was
>Okay. It's jazzy but it lacks punch. But for 1991 and Hip Hop. I guess it's revolutionary.
But that went out the fucking window until i discover this.
youtube.com
I was going to let the rapper off.
>Hey, at least it's original
It's not even that. It's seems to have been "sample" from a Grant Green song. I listen to the song and noticed something. They worsen the song. Not only infringed on the rights of the songs placeholder. But did FUCKING NOTHING TO IT. It's a simple loop. They got off stealing a jazz musician and went out with a 4.09/5.00 from 12 thousand mor- i mean nice fellow people.
It's really easy. I even RECREATED IT. THIS IS WERE THIS PIC COMES ALONG.
What you're looking at is a screenshot of my recreated version. I cut you guys the slack and made it a few seconds long (like it should have been. or not at all.
clyp.it
I was able to re make a song off of one of the 100 greatest album of all time according to thousands of people. (The song isn't even unpopular. It has a 4.1 average out of fucking 5) in under THREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE FUCKKKKKKKKKKINNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGG MINUTES.
That's half the fucking time to preform Dance Of Eternity.
cont-
>I was able to re make a song off of one of the 100 greatest album of all time according to thousands of people.
i can play dream theater's entire discography on every instrument
>brain drill
you could've chosen so many brutal death bands and you chose that one? cmon senpai
Lol this post is ridiculous. If complexity somehow unlocks more meaning, explain punk, minimalism, drone, noise, and 4'33
Is this some RYM review?
>It challenges the audience and manipulates them into more emotions, states, mindframes and sentiments than minimalistic/simplistic music.
Wrong. Prog musicians care more about masturbating in their instruments than actually giving meaning to their music.
They did it first.
yeah no shit it's a simple loop. like many people said before ITT, complexity =/= good
your loop is also very bad. for something that is supposedly so fucking easy you did an awful job at it.
Of course you can re-make it you idiot, but neither you nor anybody else made it at first. There are plenty of artists throughout history who could recreate a Van Gogh with their technical skills but that doesn't mean they're just as good as Van Gogh.
How are you this ignorant?
The only thing I feel while listening to most prog it's disgust.
wait that loop is actually fucking awful lmao
All those genres revel in unimaginative stupidity, grounded by the concreteness of reality. When have they ever contemplated the flowers of keys? The pillars that unleash a barrage of frozen flames? The mired bats indulging in the poisoned cauldron, only to transform into the rogue wanderer who hid in the castle long ago to retrieve the amulets that will avenge his trapped brother? The serenade of a card, fluttered with the leaves of dust? Never. It's all stupid. I don't heavily enjoy Dream Theater, but they're much better than this pathetic failure to deliver the intensity of jazz.
A true artist makes either 1) something simple sound complex or 2) something complex sound simple
If it doesn't fit in there it's usually not very good
Now to finish this off.
What we got are two songs. Both from two different dimensions.
One made by
>Classical trained musicans
>Supported a story (merging artforms)
>Amazing technical ability
>So
>Fucking
>Good
and another by
>THEY DIDN'T EVEN FUCKING MAKE IT
Okay. What i'm saying is this. Is it fair? Is it fair to praise the untalented and give them a dollar while mildly liking the talented and throwing them a nickle? At what point do we say something about it? From my time here, nobody here talks about the fact this song was a rip from a jazz song. More of the same worthless bah of the people. Dream Theater trained for years. You don't train to loop songs. It's only fair that all of your dozens of complex master works get praised into the top 100 of RYM. You train to understand you soul and the music. Remember to look into these songs. You'll get a better understand of the genius of the artist and why you love music. I say we get a fundraiser to get Quest into a music school. It's a win win for all of us. But at this point. I really just want to finish this and not talk about it. To boil it down.
TALENT SHOULD BE PRAISED
UNTALENTED WILL BE PASSED
> When have they ever contemplated the flowers of keys? The pillars that unleash a barrage of frozen flames? The mired bats indulging in the poisoned cauldron, only to transform into the rogue wanderer who hid in the castle long ago to retrieve the amulets that will avenge his trapped brother? The serenade of a card, fluttered with the leaves of dust? Never. It's all stupid.
This might be the single cringiest thing I've ever heard, oh my fucking lord.
This is literally the worst sample I've ever heard. You had to loop a SINGLE phrase and you somehow couldn't manage to end it in the right place.
It's actually kind of incredible if I'm being honest.
wew
Dream Theater fucking sucks, kid
ATCQ is ok
lol this thread
youtube.com
This was also made my classically trained musicians, and it's infinitely more complex than anything Dream Theater has ever thought of.
All is well with the world
holy hell
>implying music is a winning game
Hate to break it but (as an artist myself) I'll add that not only are there millions of you out there, but you all compete for the grand prize
Creative types explore the realm of a high risk-high gain situation, whereas generally people prefer low-risk, safe-bet lifestyles which afford them day to day comforts
You really ought to pick one, and no you probably aren't going to get both. If you choose art 100% then you're probably already doing it from a place of complete sacrifice and reduction of all other life practices and conveniences because those things tie you down.
Also, on TOP of the poor odds, you have to be innovative enough to challenge music institution (including education and current "trends") to become your own artist (because ultimately that's what people want).
Unless you have the looks of Katy Perry or Bieber or Ariana Grande you better be ready to work your ass off, as well as live the life of a true artist (this is all implying that you even have the talent and intelligence to begin with).
And yes, intelligence is a real thing, if you can outpace everybody you do have a chance
holy fucking shit dude
if this is bait I applaud you for your effort
You have so much praise for classically trained musicians but you don't know the first thing about classical composers, like, for example, that they borrowed from each other's compositions, note-for-note, ALL OF THE TIME. It's a token of respect and a musical tradition dating back as far as we can date it, and by ignoring it you're exposing how ignorant you are about actual classical music while simultaneously trying to praise it.
You know that phrase, standing on the shoulders of giants? Yeah, that applies to music too.
OP here.
I'll like to thank whoever you are. I'm busy living a bit so i can't reply to everybody. But you seem to grasp music as amazingly as the greats.
Much love dude.
yeah so anyways dream theater is fucking terrible
just say you don’t like black music after jazz and get on with your life dude. if you don’t get why sampling is meritable in the year of our grimes, 2018, then you’ll never get it, and i think most people here are perfectly fine with you staying a brainlet. also i’m a huge dream theater fan and Scenes is not nearly their best work. dry wank prog noodling is self-indulgent, whether you like the music or not.
>user discovers what hip hop is
you do realize almost the entire genre is comprised of songs that contain samples in them right?
no dream theater album is over a 3/5
no rap album is over a 2.5/5
The easiest way to tell if someone has an uninformed opinion on hip-hop is if they refer to it as rap
the two aren't synonymous sweetie
pretty much, bro
thanks for reminding me
still great
holy fuck that loop is terrible. you really fucked yourself here by showing us you can’t do what you claim is easy, unskilled musical theft. like, that sounds good to your ears? you thought THAT’s what would convince people? give up music entirely.
this is a good thread, i genuinely got a good laugh out of that attempt to emulate a loop
You do realize that it's choppy like that because it's supposed to be a 4 second part of the sample interspersed in 17 seconds, right? Obviously the OP, if he applied himself more, could make much better.
And no, I'm not the OP. I'm the guy this idiot replied to.
>if he had tried
le smart but lazy
What, you wanted him to wait longer to develop it? You try making a better sample in a few minutes.
its pretty easy to lock it down bro... you get the groove and apply the crossfader, i mean ITS A DOWNBEAT DUDE
I think the point is that it kinda takes more effort to make good samples and his point on how it's so easy and brainless is wrong.
If he's trying to make a point, wouldn't it make sense to accurately demonstrate it? If he's just going to half ass it, why bother doing it at all since it only harmed his credibility.
>"lol this is very easy to do"
>does it awfully
>people call out how awful it is
>"lol it wouldn't be if he tried"
I don't think making a loop is particularly difficult or anything but good fucking lord man at least be honest when arguing
thanks for reminding us how much this song bumps
that's called sampling you gargantuan retard
i completely understand how sample looping works, thank you. it’s choppy because he doesn’t know what he’s fucking doing, or talking about, obviously.
how the fuck can anyone defend this? it's literally stolen music with a beat behind it
This might be the most autistic thread on /mu right now.
it's also the most entertaining thread
PROCESS ONLY MATTERS TO ARTISTS
NOBODY ELSE GIVES A FUCK
IF YOU THINK PROCESS MATTERS OR SHOULD MATTER TO LISTENERS YOU'RE UP YOUR OWN ASS
THE END PRODUCT IS WHAT PEOPLE HEAR
The song is already half ass.
>literally stolen music
You can be autistic about samples being stolen music all you want user, but I know that you pirate music so give it up.
completely unrelated. they didn't even try to rearrange the sample to create something different, it's just a shameless ripoff with a shitty beat behind it. it sounds exactly the fucking same. anyone who does this is an absolute hack
