Well, I think Swans have a special distinction of striking a nice balance between heavy angry and artistic without just delving into metal. There are plenty of angry metal albums, not as many "rock" albums. Metal bands have the advantage of whats come before them while Swans seems to have pioneered their sounds what seems more organically and uniquely. You have certain expectations diving into metal and I think Swans manages to make heavy angry depressing music without going in a direction thats been done to death. But thats just my worthless blogpost

burning witch is probably the heaviest and most personal version of personal doom and misanthropy i can imagine. vocals and lyrics really cement it for me.
I would say though that flipper set the precedent for the best articulation of misanthropy and depressive nihilism because of the composition. the kind of goofy and bouncy catchy basslines really give you that kind of feigning happiness kind of fake sociability while underneath is the intense discord of a perpetual disquietude produced by endless failure for the self to actualize itself or belong inside of any relationship outside of itself. Thats where the noisey guitar comes in. then the lyrics seem to speak for themselves and their delivery is just as mocking as it is scathing.
No Trend seemed to take this idea and really push it to even noisier and aggressive avenues, such a treat. I especially love how it makes all of hardcore punk and that trash obsolete too.
and then orchid because all that grind shit and powerviolence and emoshit is all bullshit without proper melodic content which is really mastered by Orchid.
also swans dont suck you fucking retards get some taste. They dont belong on this list because they really are in their own world. probably my favorite band
