Separate the CSA states that are mostly Appalachian from the worthwhile ones and call it a day.

Literally just nuke the south hick states sorrounding the Appalachians, they arrive nothing but a cancerous leech sucking the government's tit for welfare.

There's no way the plains states break up into that many regions. They would have a hard enough time sustaining themselves even if they're all combined.

I doubt Texas would take Arkansas and Louisiana but I could see a loose partnership between The "CSA" (which I wouldn't want it to be called) and Texas.

Utah would never join Colorado, and Nevada would either have to join with Cascadia or Arizona and New Mexico or be taken over by Mexico.

I don't know a lot about the cultural lines in the North East but I find it highly unlikely that NE (VT and NH in particular) would join a New York still dominated by NYC. What seems likely to me is that Upstate NY breaks away from NYC and joins NE and NYC, Long Island and NJ become an entity.

A breakup is inevitable but it will certainly be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

Here are some building blocks to play with, based on ethnicity, religion and politics. Some of these would have to decide who to team up with to make larger and more secure or viable units.
