How was he evil? Antisemitism isn't exactly evil unless you act on it.
The main evil you can associate with Wagner is killing the tonal system, and it wasn't just him (and nor was it intentional). Guys like Strauss and Mahler share just as much blame for putting the tonal system through its seemingly last paces. This caused guys like Stravinsky and Schoenberg to abandon it completely.
