/daily/ - just be yourself edition

Christian Jenkins
Christian Jenkins

The point of these threads is to encourage people to look for new and interesting music. We do this by listening to and ideally discussing albums we've never heard before. Many of us already listen to new music daily, these people are in it to venture "out of their comfort zone" by listening to albums they otherwise wouldn't have, or just to have a good time.

On Avery Island:
So nice to have more NMH material to listen to after overplaying ITAOTS into the ground. Mangum's voice is the gift that keeps on giving, his straining nasalliness is so cool.

Really it's everything I liked about ITAOS to a slightly lesser degree, the cohesion between the whole album is there, just not AS there. The imagery is powerful, but not Two Headed Boy powerful. I felt that some of the weirder choices didn't go over as well, like the keyboard smashing in 'someone is waiting'. The one aspect thatI felt On Avery Island got better was the instrumental interlude, I always felt that the marching funeral durge 'The Fool' was always the lowpoint of ITAOTS. In contrast 'Marching Theme' may even by my favorite track. Other standouts are 'A baby for pree' and 'Gardenhead/Leave me alone'

The worst track(s) no question are 'Pree-Sisters Swallowing a Donkey's Eye' part 1 and 2

Liked it/10

Pc Music vol 1:
Well that's a new sound! Very interesting. Takes the bubblegum sweet feeling I love from acoustical twee pop, but infuses it with the infectious energy and vocal manipulation I like so much from Discovery.

It does feel disjointed even with some common ground between everyone, while the median song is decently fun and listenable, anything with Hannah Diamond was about 10x better than the rest.

The weird was hit or miss, I wanted to like stuff like 'USA' or 'Wannabe' but they either became too repetitive with a sound that couldn't carry the length, or went off the deep end in certain portions.

Standout, non Hannah songs would be 'In my Dreams' and 'Laplander'

Worst song is 'USA'

It was OK, but i'm glad I heard it/10

hmm the headmaster's ritual is actually a fucking GREAT song

The Hotelier - Home, Like Noplace Is There (2014)
emo, pop punk

A standard, mediocre emo album bookended by two absolutely phenomenal songs. Reminds me quite a bit of the Sorority Noise record from last year, the opener is stupidly good, totally blows away my perceptions of what emo can be. The closer is really good too, I'm a big fan of super melodramatic emo. Everything in between is okay, just totally unremarkable and bland. It's more emotional and artistic than your standard pop punk, but it's still kinda bland pop punk at its core.

2.0+

The Sundays - Reading, Writing and Arithmetic (1990)
indie pop, jangle pop

Pleasant jangle pop. Wheeler is an absolutely spectacular vocalist, she carries even the most unremarkable songs with her soothing yet endlessly energetic voice. The album is a lot better when it goes into dream pop territory, it reminds me quite a bit of Mazzy Star and it's very easy to just drift off too. The more jangley stuff just doesn't do anything for me at all.

2.5-

식료품groceries - 슈퍼마켓Yes! We're Open (2014)
vaporwave

One of the most successful vaporwave albums looking at it purely from a concept-based perspective. The music here really does sound like it's from a demented, other-worldly supermarket, and it's pretty cool to listen to looking at it that way. Musically, it's really thin. It has some nice, super bright textures, wasted on pieces that don't do anything worthwhile.

The Smiths - Meat Is Murder (1985)
jangle pop, indie pop

Starts off with one of the Smiths' best songs, "The Headmaster's Ritual". It boasts one of Morrissey's best vocal performances, and one of the band's most driving, energetic instrumentals, I love it. The record picks back up again with "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore", the rest is typical Smiths stuff, not my thing.

Honestly nothing impressive. LP120 and Micca PB42X. I should honestly upgrade soon instead of buying so many records. Most modern stuff isn't super expensive except for when I blow $30+ on limited colored stuff or OSTs. Bernstein is pretty good for Shostakovich's symphonies but I feel like the final movement expresses outright joy with very little hints of melancholy. A bit too flashy and I don't think Shostakovich intended it to be flashy. Then again, I'm a pleb so I'm probably totally wrong.

Yeah! Orakel is p. much the first dubstep-like electronic that I fell in love with & opened up my tastes to so many other things. I owe it and velocity:design:comfort a lot.

I've heard Dummy & Portishead, but they haven't clicked for me like Massive Attack yet. I'll relisten to them & try Third as well soon.

I like Aesop's Skelethon & Impossible Kid. Busdriver's voice is scarily alike to his I think.

Hmm if you like Skelethon and Impossible Kid, check out None Shall Pass and also the side project with Rob Sonic, Hail Mary Mallon - Bestiary
