Its like they look "cheaper" for a lack of a better term. I can't quite place my finger on it. SOUE, XOXO, Stranger Things and the others have it, what is it?
Why do Netflix shows/movies look different than normal shows/movies?

thats what happens when movie salesmen design movies
I know what you are talking about. I was thinking that they must use the same digital cameras for everything. Or maybe the low-bitrate of the stream gives them that look. Hard to say.
>digital cameras
This was my guess but I don't know enough about that types of stuff to say.
Aren't there any film geeks on here to help me out?
I always thought it was just mediocre directing and set design
Definitely know what you mean, though
I've noticed this too, but always thought it was vaguely "better" the way they're doing it. I don't know what it is that's different, but it does make Netflix shows have their own feel, so I guess it works out for them.
Kimmy Schmidt has it too. It looks like a disney channel kids show.
... (cont.), I was just thinking, is it the field of view used in their shows being generally smaller or larger? Might make sense for a platform widely used on mobile/tablet/etc. Would make it more "comfortable"
99% of movies released in the past 5 years are shot on digital instead of film. That's nothing unique to Netflix.
It's like watching a show made by aliens attempting to imitate real shows. They feel almost like parodies.
It's like that steak in The Fly. When Jeff Goldblum teleports it, and Gena Davis says it tastes synthetic.
I know this is late but did anyone noticed how dark in color House of Cards was this past season? I thought my laptop have a problem or something.
That was my problem with Unfortunate Events. I actually had to adjust the brightness on my TV.
Most of the shit is shot with REDs or cameras in a similar price range nowadays. They use a super flat color profile to get the maximum dynamic range out of it and then they have to colorgrade it heavily.
I think it's the grading where they fuck up. Look at Stranger Things, everybody is grey no one has a normal skintone.
It's looks like a student film which was shot with a 2k$ dlsr. Look some up on vimeo, they always fuck up the skin color.
I couldn't even finish the first episode of The OA because of this. It just looked fucking disgusting.
I don't quite understand the "flat color profile" part but aren't most shows color graded heavily? Do these just look shitty because of poor color grading?
Pretty much every movie shoots on digital now. I think it's more a case of cheaper digital cameras than normal film productions, or more specifically cheaper lenses.
They're usually working on a smaller budget and timeframe as most commercial features as well so they aren't lit as nicely. It's not something you're really consciously aware of, but like you said, your brain notices that it looks wrong. It's worse lighting and cheaper lenses
Color grading for most Netflix shows is pretty much the same. All shot on digital as far as I know too.
kinda dark, too
To get the most out of your digital camera you can shoot in a super grey mode(and don't "waste" data on color) and then fix the color in post
Shitty example here
Nearly everything is being graded anyway now, so there is no reason to not go as flat as possible. But for some fucking reason everybody likes grey unnatural skin colors now. It can fit some movies likes The VVitch, but most movies and shows aren't placed in a super triste world.
This is exactly how I feel about CW shows. They all just feel really shitty to watch for some reason.
And I'm not talking about the plot.
Thats more on the directing side of things. Netflix has a camera problem.
