the plot/premise of the show is very much in the background, especially for the first season. The Leftovers is a character show through and through. It also handles themes of religion and belief really well, meaning it never comes off as pro-religion or fedora tipping anti-religion propaganda, unlike pretty much everything else related to religion these days.
