Who can you confidently say is the greatest director of this generation?
Who can you confidently say is the greatest director of this generation?
kubrick. no other answer
>this generation
judging from the critics, Chazelle. haven't seen any though.
Joel and Ethan Coen
Christopher "Bravo" Nolan.
I dunno, it's between Cronenberg, Refn, Fincher, and Boyle for me
I'm probably overlooking a couple
(I don't include Lynch because he's stopped directing films)
Nolan.
maybe
i think zemeckis and Verhoeven deserve a mention for doing pure kino
Snyder
not even memeing
Nolan ruined his credibility with Interstellar
I hope you are not, because I thought I was the only one.
Richard Kelly
fite me
>not TDKR
>not Inception
>not the plot-hole ridden TDK
In terms of expectations,Interstellar is without doubt, his biggest failure
Kubrick had a great ability to capture a scene.
But, overall he didn't understand human interaction. So, yeah if you're looking for quality cinematogy, he was your man. Otherwise, he wasn't anything special.
That said, the world of film was/is filled with hacks, so overall he is still great even today.
But is the greatest?
Clint Eastwood
this generation?
Sorrentino or Villeneuve
...
for me is between Michael Haneke, Lars von Trier, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Harmony Korine
Decent chices, but atleast make other things than Hollywood genre films. What the fuck is up with all these other suggestions?
I'd go with
Andrey Zvyagintsev
Tetsuya Nakashima
Chan-Wook Park
Nuri Bilge Ceylan
Thomas Vinterberg
As well as probably a few others I've forgot.
Tarkovsky.
ceylan is an actual hack who rips of chekovs 1oh dear me isn't life so banal and monotone from the middle class perspective" in every single film. people on like him because muh turkish ethnicity
Ben Wheatley, Béla Tarr or Gaspar Noé
Can you be any more contrarian?
That's all we trying to do here no?
Have you seen anything like Once upon a time in Anatolia? Please do tell.
dunno who the best is, but I'm sure that Refn will be the first against the wall
Yorgos Lanthimos
Touche
/ourguy/
'If it doesn't have waifus in it, it's not kino' - Francois Truffaut
You're clearly a first year film student. So, your opinion as worthless as your degree will be. Should you manage to get it.
After watching Incendies yesterday, I'm come to terms with the fact that Villeneuve is the best director of our time.
this
every other faggot is at best doing homages to le old greatest directors
From the old-hags that are still alive: Lynch, Wong Kar-wai, Jarmusch
Refn is too pretentious and shallow, only thing he gets done in a perfect way are visuals and cinematography. PTA is probably best amongst the bigger artsy names in hollywood.
what Plot hole?
serious replies only please
>le kubrick didn't understand humans meme xD
>Dr. Strangelove
>A Clockwork Orange
>Barry Lyndon
>Full Metal Jacket
>Eyes Wide Shut
He understood how people work better than most
MARTIN
KANSLER
whoever directed home alone and home alone 2
villeneuve or fincher for me
noe is unique but just comes off as a try hard edgelord half the time. he doesn't care about substance, he cares about shock. i like his movies but i know im expecting something shocking with every movie. one trick pony.
yea it's kubrick.
I think they key, was his attention to detail and the specificity of his mental vision matching what ended up on the actual film itself.
>Director whose career mainly spanned from the 50's - 70's
>this generation
LOL Oops.
This generation, hmmm...
Gotta give it to the cuck king, Quentin Tarantino
THIS IS TURNING INTO NIGHTCALL ALL OF A SUDAAAAAAA
>Ben Wheatley
PTA
There Will Be Blood is the greatest film of the 21th century so far, fight me.
A Field in England is one of the best films of this decade, so yes.
either fincher or wkw
Possibly Ridley Scott. - Does he count as this gen as he is still going?
Guy Ritchie gets an honourable mention, he still has time to do great things.
I think most of these questions need to be broken down into decades rather than generations.
Nope.
Do you even know about Trumps policies or are you just a memer? Also do you care to provide a counter opinion? Or are you worried I'd find out you have shit taste and then your opinion would have no gravity?
More like king of mediocre movies.
Scott shouldnt even be in the discussion
Tarkovsky wannabe.
Kurosawa was the best regardless.
This, presuming they're not too old to qualify.
You wish. Kubrick started filming almost a decade before Tarkovsky did.

Friendly reminder that most of Kubrick films takes place in the same universe: Kubrickverse.
Part of the Kubrickverse
2001: A Space Odyssey
A Clockwork Orange
The Shining
Full Metal Jacket
Eyes Wide Shut
And maybe:
Dr Strangelove.
2001 and ACW, yes
The rest of them; definitely not
Xavier Dolan
Yorgos Lanthimos
Radu Jude
>2001 and ACW, yes
Including The Shining, FMJ and EWS
no
you're a fucking idiot
gotta love reddit
please stop this meme, Refn directing and cinematography is terrible
Yes
You're a fucking retard
>no u
great argument fagtron, you sure convinced me with those hot opinions
>yes u
I dont give a fuck about your worthless opinion. Neck yourself faggotbeard
Define "this generation" because Kubrick was off not of this generation. There are literally no great directors of THIS generation because everyone of THIS generation are too young.
>getting this mad at a Croatian phone-repair board
Genuine kino
It's disgusting that Terrence Malick wasn't even mentioned in this thread.
