Just saw this and Walkabout for the first time. Is there any other Aussie-kino I should know about?

The Year My Voice Broke

Wake In Fright is very good. Not quite Picnic at Hanging Rock tier, but very very good. Bad Boy Bubby also usually gets tossed around as "kino" in Australian scenes.

My personal non-kino recommendations are Gallipoli, Chopper, Two Hands and Animal Kingdon. If you're feeling adventurous, check out some aussie comedy too - The Castle, Muriel's Wedding and, although you might have seen it, Crocodile Dundee.

I fucking love Wake in Fright and I don't even understand most of it (I'm American)

Can't go wrong with some more Wierkino

Thanks. I'll definitely these out.

Is picnic at hanging rock, dare I say, Lovecraftian?

Yes, mad Max, the road warrior, the rescuers down under.

Rescuers Down Under is KINO you sarcastic faggot.

BMX BANDITS

I've been to Hanging Rock multiple times. Can be spooky but the ranger kicks you out after 5pm

You could interpret it like that. Weir even brings up the old gods in the interview on the criterion dvd.

The Proposition

Great list. I'm going to add Ghosts... of the Civil Dead.

fantastic horror film called patrick (1978).

This was great. As long as Richard Franklin is being brought up I have to mention Road Games.

My Brilliant Career (1979)

i like your taste.
i think roadgames just got a bluray release.

Good thread, lads.

How come Auskino is so comfy?

I reckon The Last Wave is Weir's best, even better and more enigmatic than PAHR.

Don's Party is comedy kino, Newsfront is historical kino, and Ghosts...of The Civil Dead is prison kino. Australia sure made some great films throughout the 70s and '80s, nowadays it's not as good.

>Decide to watch some Aussiekino
>Opens with wide pan of the desert
>Didgeridoo music starts playing
>Eject the VHS tape and watch something good

...

this is a great film.
reminded me of gregory's girl.

this is literally the only aussie film I'd ever really call great

>Decide to watch some Amerikkkino
>Opens on an expansive cotton field with blacks working hard
>banjo and fiddle music starts playing
>remove 8mm film reel and watch something good.

Yeah it was pretty good.

Also Flirting for OP

>Decide to watch some Amerikino
>Opening shot of the New York City skyline
>Hip hop starts playing
>remove 8mm film reel and watch something good.

Definitely see The Last Wave, OP, if you want some more of the elements you might have liked about Picnic and Walkabout.

Is that prime Naomi Watts and Thandie Newton I spy?

The funny voices. I think I love Aussie crime movies because the accent is stereotypically that of a happy-go-lucky bloke getting pissed in the sun, so seeing Aussie characters talk about dark shit like murders is a very pleasing contrast to me

>That's not a very gay drink, mate.

Also was the series of this any good?

Yes.
