What about the star trek reboot?

did you not see guardians of the galaxy? there was a talking squirrel in it.

Nah. Best Trek since Undiscovered Country, but that's not saying much.

...

Better than any of the canon endings

STORY
1 > 2 > shit > 3 > letting muslims in the country > andromeda

GAMEPLAY
2 > 1 > shit > 3 > federal funding for hormone treatment and sex reassignment surgery > andromeda

Beyond is genuinely a good film tho. Pine really grew into the role and the writing and directing change proved to be an excellent choice. I'd rate it higher than Search for Spock and on par with Motion Picture and Voyage Home

>main villain in the first game just says "lol i'm not gonna tell you my motives cuz u just dont get it lol"

the writing was always shit

He was insane and under the influence.

T. Prequelfag

Did you even play the game? He's a literal robotic puppet.

So you've played a game that hasn't been released yet?

What do you mean? Passengers was great.

>literally being such an ignorant newshit that you can't take one look at the trainwreck that is andromeda and realize what a steaming pile of garbage it is

>Sup Forumsedditor doesn't watch good sci fi flicks
>complains that there's "no good sci fi"
really makes u think

Also, Mass Effect 1 was the last good Mass Effect game.

Sup Forumsacks have peecognitive abilities. Or he just hates everything new before it even sees the light of day because he has literally nothing better to do.

fuck off /t/v/

>I NEED TO TALK ABOUT POL PLEASE SOMEONE TALK ABOUT POL
See

What were they thinking?

Sovereign was a puppet?

When will they learn!?

why do you faggots need to bring up Sup Forums when nothing political is even mentioned.

This coming from somebody that thinks 2 plays better than 3. Or that 2's writing is better than shit. I'm gonna say you probably don't know a trainwreck from a hole in the wall.

Liberal insecurity, they need to slap a label on any opposition so as to demonize and marginalize their opinions instead of having to formulate a proper argument.

2's writing was half decent, half shit, which syncs up rather coincidentally with the fact the lead writer/director was switched halfway through the project. The original intro was going to be a lot more interesting than "muh space jesus".

You are completely unable to lower your weapon in 3.
3 literally has a "skip the gameplay, give me story!" Difficulty option.

I need to learn the dance routine

I agree with this

Go back to your video gaymes \v\ermin

>not The Phantom Pain
kill yourself nromie

As someone who played these games more times than I care to admit, they are extremely overrated in terms of story.

The first game is generic "ancient aliens have returned to wreak havoc" style plot that was already done in Halo, Second game is a Star Trek TOS simulator/dating simulator/Ocean's Eleven in Space and the third game is a fairly competent third person shooter with the same plot as one of Bioware's previous games, Dragon Age Origins.

They are not terrible by any means but when people say they are the greatest sci-fi event of the last ten to fifteen years they are blowing it way out of proportion

I thought it "borrowed" from Babylon 5 a little too much to be considered original. Loved the game though. Damn shame they only made one...

Well they are the greatest sci fi videogames of the last 15 years (which isn't saying much)

Nah, the first game is a really atmospheric piece of sci-fi with some good stuff in the premise and a bit of Lovecraftian horrow blended into the backdrop. The second ruins the atmosphere and setting and makes it more of a generic action schlockfest. The third is fucking awful, and fuck you for calling it fairly competent.

They're not as good as Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas

They're not as good as Metal Gear Solid (if that counts as sci-fi)

And I don't really play JRPG's but I'm sure there are tons of great JRPG's that are sci-fi themed and have better worldbuilding and plot

Nah, fuck you m8

Mass Effect 3's shooting and cover mechanic is actually fluid and enemies are varied, you have a clear concept of what you are doing and how it impacts your goal, and multiplayer was challenging and encouraged customization

If you only care about storytelling go read a damn book faggot

I liked reading about all the different planets in the encyclopedia (when it was discovered, significant archeological findings, info about colonization, other anomalies, etc) and exploring in the mako and collecting resources on the ground in ME1. Sure it was a clunky as shit but still fun and really made it feel like you were exploring the galaxy.
I agree with both of these sentiments multiplayer was kinda shit that i sadly actually payed money for their BS lootboxes

fallout is not sci fi, it's just fiction
there's nothing remotely scientific about those games

mass effect on the other hand is literally named after a (fictional) scientific phenomenon present in the game

Fallout 3 is fucking trash. New Vegas is pretty cool, though.

3 streamlined combat and the RPG mechanics to the point where it was barely different from any other TPS on the market. The story is a direct "fuck you" to anybody who enjoyed the previous games and is just nonsensical at times. Then there's the shoehorned in journalist character, robot cameltoe (why the fuck did they give EDI a body?), and the tranny redesign of Ashley. Any enemy variety doesn't really matter since it's mostly skin deep, with basic archetypes being represented in all factions with any real defining traits that make them feel different to fight being absent. You had a clear concept of what you were doing in the other games if you paid some damn attention. The worst thing is that any semblance of atmosphere is gone with all the shitty oversights and watering down of the setting. The multiplayer was fun, though (probably since it was outsourced).

Fallout is definitely sci-fi.

>only things involving space travel are sci fi
Why can't Star Wars babies stay on Reddit?

>it has robots therefore sci fi
>nuclear war therefore sci fi

What a shitty strawman, it's clear you never played the games.

There's aliens and genetic expierments in fallout.

Star Wars is also not sci fi
Thanks for proving my point

XCOM 1 and 2 > ME series imo.

>3 streamlined combat and the RPG mechanics to the point where it was barely different from any other TPS on the market

TPS elements existed since the first game in a rudimentary form, and the powers tree in 3 was the most complex it have ever been.

Even if the first two games had been turn-based or like KOTOR or something the fact that you disliked the change is your own problem anyway, as you're not leveling any accusations against the combat as is.

>The story is a direct "fuck you" to anybody who enjoyed the previous games and is just nonsensical at times

As I mentioned before, the plot is literally the same as Dragon Age Origins (game is centered around episodic events revolved around the goal of building an army to deal with a powerful threat). The missions you go on work towards that goal besides the admittedly distracting Cerberus subplot. The Crucible is a Macguffin but within the context of the story its the only capable way of dealing with a such a large and powerful threat. The game converts actions you take in the gameplay into a meaningful score, and while the ending with extended cut is not as detailed as it should have been, your actions throughout the entire trilogy are represented in some small way.

>Any enemy variety doesn't really matter since it's mostly skin deep, with basic archetypes being represented in all factions with any real defining traits that make them feel to fight being absent.

Obviously, there are similarities, but it is also obvious that Reaper forces use brute force while Cerberus are more tactical, and Geth are push-overs, admittedly.

>You had a clear concept of what you were doing in the other games if you paid some damn attention

In the first game the Council ends up just telling you where Saren is hiding out, and if they can extract audio files from a dead Geth to prove Saren's involvement I refuse to believe that everything you did on the main story missions couldn't have been found out just by hacking

Not sci fiction

As for the second game, you spend the whole game gathering various mercenaries to attack a giant enemy base. The mercenaries' special abilities never come into play and beyond getting the Reaper IFF Shepard wasn't even necessary, after that they should have just sent a fleet of ships in since Cerberus obviously has them (see Mass Effect 3)

>The worst thing is that any semblance of atmosphere is gone with all the shitty oversights and watering down the setting

Nothing was "watered" down, everything was just put to the back because of the Intergalactic war that seems to be getting the way of everything

>you shouldn't expect a competant story in video games ever, only books have those things
stop with this fucking fallacy

it's true though
I can name of a dozen movies in the last year with great stories while you'd be hard pressed to name one game per year with a good story.

The power tree in 3 was the simplest that it had been
>In the first game the Council ends up just telling you where Saren is hiding out, and if they can extract audio files from a dead Geth to prove Saren's involvement I refuse to believe that everything you did on the main story missions couldn't have been found out just by hacking
What is that supposed to mean? In the story you're directly following where Saren had gone in an attempt to find and stop him. No amount of hacking could let you do that. It's very clear to someone who pays attention that once the Council gives you the jurisdiction to hunt Saren down, your job is to hunt him down.
>As I mentioned before, the plot is literally the same as Dragon Age Origins (game is centered around episodic events revolved around the goal of building an army to deal with a powerful threat)
And I think that's a bad thing. In the end, your choices that you made had no impact on what happened at the end (three colors of energy blasts with a different voice over). It's a fuck you to fans who had been playing since the first game and wanted to see their actions come to fruition. Also Kai Leng and Shepard getting sad over the kid were unbelievably stupid and contemptuous to the audience. Various narratives in the game also just come out of nowhere and are nonsensical (Quarians reclaiming their homeworld while the Reapers invade, Cerberus which was a minor terrorist organization getting a fleet that easily subdues the Citadel).

Mass effect 1 was good because they literally ripped off everything from a superior game.
It's almost a 1:1 copy of star control 2. The only difference is the evil aliens in mass effect are much shallower

gameplay inspired by star control II maybe but the plot is 100% ripped straight from freespace

Its sci-fi fantasy
