After years of hearing so many good things about this film, I sat down and watched it, and HOLY FUCK, this movie is "baby's first edge."
>>Twist you can see a mile away.
>>Looked how fucked up we can be? Woooooah, we're so deep!

Is it possible that it was better when it came out? Because I was pretty unimpressed.

M A S T E R P I E C E

it's not an american movie so it doesn't rely on being edgy or having le unpredictable twist, but thats what you think it is since those are the movies you usually watch

How was the twist predictable? Literally nothing revealing is depicted about the characters until the end

The guy comes out of the apartment and falls for a super young girl? It's pretty fucking obvious.

not all of us have daughters on the mind 24/7

Also like some Asian movies for some reason the ending is way over the top. I mean the ending is about a guy confronting the man who held him hostage for years and then tricked him into having sex with his own daughter because old boy ruined his life by telling everyone about the guys incestuous relationship with his sister and it STILL manages to be over the top.

An old guy wanting to fuck a young girl is just unheard of. He had to have been hypnotized to fall in love with his daughter.

It's not about being deep, it's just entertaining.

That said Chaser and the rest of Na Hong-jin's films are better than Park's.

It's still really obvious to guess.

This, it was unironically a mindfuck for me when i first watched it. Still one of my favorite movies.

No it's not

Nah, you're either lying or someone told you or gave you hints about it beforehand.

The early stuff is kind of entertaining, but the ending just got flat out uncomfortable. Not in a "Oh man, I feel terrible", but in a "Can I go now?" sort of uncomfortable.

Now go watch edgy kino like Ichi the Killer

Gee, a movie about a guy where they mentioned that he has a daughter, and then fucks a woman 1/3rd his age. Never would have guessed that. Maybe because I'm used to the phrase "that's someone's daughter".

I have no idea what that means.
It dragged on too long?
I don't agree.

>a movie about a guy where they mentioned that he has a daughter, and then fucks a woman 1/3rd his age.
I really don't understand how that translates to
>someone brainwashed him and his daughter to fall in love with each other for revenge

Like, it got to the part where it just keeps going, he's on the ground going "Woof Woof Woof" and I'm just thinking "What the hell am I watching?"

How the fuck is your first thought that he was hypnotized to fuck his own daughter?

It's only predictable if you're a 16 year old douchebag like OP. $10 says he read the whole Wikipedia article before watching the movie.

that's asian humour for you m8

If you don't explain what happened to a character's family in a mystery they'll probably show up later in the movie, or be an established character. This is a very common cliche.

I just guessed that he fucked his own daughter. The hypnotized part I didn't get.
I'm 30.

Any movie where you have to introduce Hypnosis as a plot element, you've fucked up

And to add to that, a film that presents "He's a father" early on and then dates a girl that's his daughters age is pretty easy to put two and two together. Maybe it's because I'm watched this film more than a decade late and I'm used to these types of twists, but it felt pretty obvious.

>30 years old
>Still on Sup Forums

Funeral Parade of Roses (1969)

There are 40 and 50 year olds that post here. This hasn't been a super secret club for a long time.

It's a bit silly to say OP is wrong; the guy had a young daughter and gets locked up for many years, then meets a girl whose age would match the daughter's. The daughter never comes up again until the end the movie, but the viewer has a decent chance of thinking the daughter information was gonna be important.

I didn't predict it myself but I imagine a great many viewers would.

>OH NO SOMEBODY KNOWS WE ARE HAVING INCEST LETS BE AS DRAMATIC AS POSSIBLE OK YOU KILL YOURSELF I'LL LOCK HIM IN A ROOM JAJAJA LMAO

Worst part about Oldboy is how retarded the revenge plot is

>oh no this guy knew I fucked my sister which caused her to kill herself so I'm gonna get super rich and hypnotize him into fucking his daughter 30 years later

Worst of the revenge trilogy desu, both Vengeance movies are way more engaging and less retarded

>"baby's first edge."
Just like OP's post.

That's just CWP's style with his streak of edgy revenge movies. They're not necessarily supposed to be realistic, all the characters in Mr Vengeance and Lady Vengeance act like psychopaths with no regard for human life too.
But they're still f*n movies.

Handmaiden is even worse. Chan-wook Park is a hack.

>Worst
Nah, Lady Vengeance was 2 hours of "nothin personnel". Took the revenge theme too far and just turned it into exploitation (not the fun/cool kind). Only one of Park's movies I've disliked

Mr. Vengeance is fairly grounded from what I remember.
Lady is a little out there at times but Oldboy is pretty balls to the wall and everyone acts like it's the citizen kane of Korea.

Personally, I loved how over the top Oldboy was. It works really well in this movie it was entertaining as hell. Thought the hypnotist lady was cool too.

That makes me uncomfortable.
How many grown ass men have called me a cuck?

this happen when you listen to plebs
korea have a lot better movies than this reddit tier meme
OP go watch Memories of murders, The Chaser, A bittersweet life, Joint Security Area
especially Memories of murders its easily in the top3 modern korean movies its pure KINO

Not many. Most posters aged 40 and up I've encountered have been on /k/ or /out/, which aren't cancerous like this shitty board.

I found it to be the exact opposite actually.
Lady was reflective and felt pretty satisfactory throughout. Oldboy was a fun ride but once I found out why he was imprisoned it just felt overblown and ridiculous. I had always assumed it was like that cause it's based on a manga but turns out the incest shit was only in the movie.

t. daughter raper
don't forget to lock her chains!

I just felt like the focus was entirely on the women getting revenge, which was fun but didn't hold up well for me. By the time they got to the collaborative execution it just felt like torture porn with a psychopathic protag who didn't have any depth (except the daughter arc) until the very end with the white cake scene.
I feel like Oldboy was trying to be a fairly straightforward thriller, which it succeeded as, while LV was trying to be deeper than the final result felt.
Mr Vegneance did similar themes better even if the ending was retarded.

Handmaiden is better

>this happen when you listen to plebs korea have a lot better movies than this reddit tier meme
>OP go watch Memories of murders, The Chaser, A bittersweet life, Joint Security Area

BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

People think this was over the top.

all of those are good films though.
Especially the Chaser.

Just because reddit likes it doesn't mean it's trash you pretentious twats.
I'd also add the Wailing, it's pretty good but long and confusing.

I suppose I can see your point, especially the torture porn aspect. I watched them all within a 24 hour period so I didn't have much time to reflect on them individually but rather as a trilogy which is why I think Oldboy seemed the weakest for me, it was overhyped by the internet and everyone else for years so when I finally watched it I was a bit letdown but with the other two I had no real idea of what they were about or how they'd unfold.

its not trash but its overated as fuck
i can add a lot more but there is no need my point is they are a lot better korean movies than a lot oldboy

If you've already heard so much about it, you were probably clued into the twist. The movie is genuinely entertaining, and a person has to have watched too many 'Sislovesme' on redtube to call it a mile off. Admittedly, it was over the top, but that's part of its charm.

>>>Twist you can see a mile away.
>>>Looked how fucked up we can be? Woooooah, we're so deep!

are these suppose to be """""""""criticisms"""""""""??

I agree, but I don't see why that needs to detract from Oldboy, which is often westerners first exposure to korean cinema.

Op. I think you'd enjoy this more by the looks of your posts.

>the hammer fight
I guess the problem with magnificent cuts is that immediately after they appear everyone imitates.

This, that whole fight in one continuous shot was great. The Burn My Shadow scene in Repo Men was a reference to it right?

Oldboy is about Edmond Dantes facing The Count of Montecristo. It is about the tragic character facing the revenge-driven character.

It's an amazing movie.

sure

That's the last movie I watched before I got sober. I almost died of alcohol poisoning.

>website came out 13 years ago
>omg why do people still use that website
>why would a 30yo still do things they did at 17?

>How many grown ass men have called me a cuck?

Depends. How many girls' lips have you kissed that have already had another guy's semen on them?

>especially Memories of murders its easily in the top3 modern korean movies its pure KINO

That's not saying much. It's also overrated.

Hey faggot Repo Men is my favorite film so you straighten your back and use capitalization and punctuation when replying about it you little cunt.

>Repo Men is my favorite film

Have one you seen one film?

>Is it possible that it was better when it came out?

Yes. Part of its acclaim is for its time.

Jokes aside I haven't seen enough films with good twists, I sat up straight in surprise in the theatre at the twist at the end of Repo Men.

>When he finds a rat and its babies and begins avidly taking care of them while stuck in the room

>His next meal served to him is the rat and its babies on a silver platter

K I N O

>Because I was pretty unimpressed.
He said without a single understanding of how South Korean movie censorship worked.

Quite possibly the most ridiculous story I've ever seen in a movie.

So how much did they butcher this? Should I give it a shot if I like Brolin?

If you're a bitter neckbearded who grew up on gore sites and porn, you won't find anything enjoyable.

It will all just seem 'edgy' to you

Oldboy is a genuine 10/10

I watched this the other night for the first time after watching The Handmaiden. This was ok, but underwhelmed me considering the hype behind it. The Handmaiden, on the other hand, was fantastic.

I think you mean, Oldboy will no longer seem edgy.

Oldboy gets spammed because it's edgy.

Whats wrong with a bit of edgy anyway? It can be cathartic

The internet and teenagers have trivialized it so people are more susceptible to mocking and dismissing "edge" and darker themes in general across all forms of media.

>implying edginess doesn't lead to edginess eating itself in order to be edgy

So you read all the plot spoilers and claim it to be predictable.

It's a good film but you're the one being an 3dgy faggot. Quick being a massive hipster contrarian, cocksucker.

>hear all these good things
>know a great twist is coming up
>oh man i figured it out

Yeah you totally weren't conditioned to expect it.

An edgeobouros

>reads multiple Oldboy threads beforehand
>suprise ending is easily figured out

Kill yourself please.

You forgot The Yellow Sea.

A Bittersweet Life is shit.

How was the ending retarded? The idea that this edgy commie teenager boasting that she has North Korean agents on her side was hilarious and to find out it was actually true is a funny twist.

Watched A Bittersweet Life last night. It was a slightly worse John Wick. Little more gory but the attempts at humor kinda sucked. Maybe that was lost in translation.

That bothered me a lot actually. It's the only thing that the remake did somewhat better.

Oldboy is pretty good. It's really hard nowadays to admit that when hearing so many people saying that they enjoyed it makes it look like it is an absolute masterpiece, when it's just pretty good for most people. The direction is great though. But in all honesty, I think I enjoyed Park's other vengeance movies more.

Its true, the movie isnt Patrician but it opens up a door toward Art house and unusual films to a viewership that didnt know about movies like that.
Its a great Film but not a masterpiece or something close to that, it has way too little to tell for that.
