That's because it's constantly/evolving throughout the film.
It first shows up as some sort of Lovecraftian worm thrashing around in Tokyo Bay. It slithers ashore, fucks shit up, develops legs, fucks more shit up, and returns to the sea.
The next time it comes ashore, it's taller, bigger, etc. with better legs. It develops arms to better fuck shit up. As the Japs and Murricans throw different weapons at it, it evolves countermeasures.
The movie is the fucking balls. Rent it.

Man I can't wait for everyone watching the shitty cut down version who wind up loving it see the actual Shin Godzilla release. Saw it 3 times in theaters in a 9 day span of time. It's incredible, the cut version is trash and butchers characters.
IE on the cut version the main guy's friend is cut down to seem like a complete asshole in the first 10 minutes so much that when I say "main guy's friend" you are probably thinking of a different person.
