How do we stop the Alt-Right from becoming the new Atheism? We're having our moment right now, but so did Atheists and now they're a joke. We don't want to end up like them.

Unlike the Internet atheists of the early 2010's I believe that we are actually a force for good, but that doesn't mean that we don't have many of the same problems. I see the same edgelords that turned atheism into a cringe-fest populating the Alt-Right. They don't care about the cause, they want a sense of identity and more importantly; a free pass to be an asshole across the Internet. If we let them co-opt the movement and represent us, we will one day be relegated to cringechannel.

We have always been around in great numbers, it's just that the Christian right (and more recently the Tea Party) have been such a loud voice this entire time they took over the GOP. We've been voting Republican this whole time because it's the lesser of two evils.

You're now seeing it catch on because 1. Our candidate is the nominee and our views are finally forefront on the political landscape and 2. Now that we are out in front, others (typical athiests youth, LGBT etc.) are seeing that the GOP isn't just for people aligned with the hardcore Christian Right. They used to vote Democrat for social reasons and civil rights reasons, but always lean fiscally conservative otherwise. Because of this, gay marriage being legalized federally and the ChristianbGOPBbeing forced to move on to other issues might be the best thing that's happened to the party.

When they start, they´re made of normal people having sensible, albeit non-mainstream opinions. However, in order to gain status in said group certain member will signal just how much they identify with said group. They will do it by militantly supporting said groups views, even if it´s totally contradictionally to the initial message of said group. Look at how extreme feminists hijacked a movement which once advocated for equality and against preferred treatment of one gender.

In order for this mechanism to work, you need to have an identity though. Which you just don´t have on Sup Forums.
