Arguably the most historic track concession in the NASCAR Circuit, the Martinsville Hot Dog is a staple for both fans and competitors alike. ~50,000 hot dogs are sold each race weekend, roughly one per race attendee, with most customers consuming multiple hot dogs throughout the weekend. For example, pit mechanics are known to keep a hot dog tally on the girders of the Martinsville garage, with tallies of over 30 appearing by the end of each weekend.
The Martinsville dog is famed for its convenience, price, unique appearance, and flavor. Dogs come in a revolutionary foil-and-wax paper carry kit, allowing hungry race fans to purchase and stow multiple additional dogs for later. Typical track delicacies do not come cheap, as similar wieners sell at Daytona for $6-$8 each, however Martinsville has kept their famed, slightly sweet, pink meats to a popular $2 each. Since 2013, fans are told to order their dogs STP style (previously known as All The Way) which comes topped with mustard, chili, onions, and slaw (aka the additives).
Despite the fanfare, the sausages themselves have not been without controversy. In 2004, in an effort to cut costs, Americrown (primary vendor for all ISC circuits) attempted to introduce a new sausage recipe and allowed fans to top the dogs themselves. The changes were noticed immediately, particularly the loss of the wieners distinctive red color, and fans were outraged. In a swift move, The original dogs returned for the fall race.
In 2015, a similarly controversial decision (dubbed the WoT) was made to switch manufacturers for the track's distinctive pink treat. After almost 70 years as the sole provider of Martinsville's tubed meat, provider Jesse Jones was passed over for Valleydale Foods, a regional subsidiary of Smithfield. The change was met with outrage from both fans and the media, however after an extensive campaign with public and press tastings, opinions were reversed and fans accepted the new hot dog as their champion.
