I mean, I spend all day on the internet but in weird niche places like Sup Forums and strange forums about race and television. When it became normal for sorority girls to spend all day on facebook and twitter and shopping online, to the point where they even bring their laptops to class just to browse their favorite websites, that's what ruined the internet. So the worst people possible for an environment based around screen names and reputations suddenly had access to it around the time that speeds were fast enough to upload photos on a regular basis with cameras attached to the very device they were using to browse online.
So now you had attention whores, who live and died based on how much love they got, finding ways to involve and insert themselves into any and everything possible for attention while basking in the narcissism that was their wont.
Factor in that social networking meant that websites didn't have to generate their own content anymore, their users would do it for them all day long and the smaller the amount of content the easier it was to host it and the more they'd come back to check on it and post more stuff.

Couple this with the fact that famous people started using the internet for Twitter and suddenly the Internet went from a place you made money from via a shopfront to a place where you stuck an ad in front of someone's face to make money. And getting people to look at more ads makes more money.

So you have narcissists clogging up the internet, websites exclusively hosting user generated content and advertisements and the social stigma of using the internet being removed(in fact it is now considered weird not to be online AND weird to be online on the wrong non-normal sites) you get an endless flood of shit that infects every part of the internet because the money is too good to ignore.
