Getting overshadowed after making a masterpiece must feel bad.

its not even his best movie. and no it's not better than Yojimbo
or throne of blood for that matter
THIS
although its a great film, op/
Although it's a great film, I'd say that the 3rd Human Condition is better and some of Kurosawa's films are better as well.
I'm glad to hear that people like this movie though.
The 3rd Human Condition film was soul crushing. That movie gave me the most feels ever, Kaji went through so much shit... Trust me, it's worth watching all 9 hours. The first movie is a bit slow for a first time watcher, but it really escalates at the end. I rewatched the whole thing recently and it still holds up as undisputed kino.
wew subjectivity
but i will agree that Harakiri is not Kobayashi's best film, but he is one of the best Japanese directors, so what should you expect?
Is 50s and 60s japanese cinema some of the most densely packed ratio of masterpieces out there?
God I fucking love High & Low
It's weird watching Mifune out of period clothing
Correct. Samurai Rebellion is the GOAT
I think it may have been the peak of cinema.
>straight up better than anything Kurosawa ever made
True, but that doesn't say much. Harakiri/Sudoku is a 7/10 at best.
Where did the japanese go wrong?
Kagemusha is god tier
When is Ran getting the 4k release? I know they showed it in theaters last year. Maybe it's already out?
Didn't Criterion made a bluray version of Kurosawa's Dreams?
Why the fuck can't i find a torrent for this
Agreed, every frame is a work of art
>>straight up better than anything Kurosawa ever made
No it's not
>>Rarely if ever talked about
Yes it is
It was his worst samurai one, though.
It's a well made film, but the theme is just edgy fedora bullshit about how medieval codes of honor were all fraudulent and every samurai was really just a sadistic thug.
>>rarely if ever talked about
On Sup Forums. A board for superhero movies, celebrity gossip, Youtube videos, basically anything except good movies.
>anything except good movies
Batman V Superman has constant threads here though
Underrated.
>it's not better than Yojimbo
what was so good about Yojimbo?
>what was so good about Yojimbo?
butter, bro.
pure butter.
unfuckingdeniable kino.
>On Sup Forums
Where else can you really go for informal movie discussion?
imdb/reddit forums are a shitfest and places like letterboxd are just for who can collect the most "friends" and write the most pretentious/inauthentic "reviews"
The big names died and they left no one to take their place.
>Why the fuck can't i find a torrent for this
How about you buy it poorfag?
What is this is this good?
>imdb
lulz not anymore
His best film is Kwaidan but this is great and so is Miike's remake of it.
fuck, I want that poster.
That would be Sanjuro which is still a very very good film.
Tatsuya Nakadai is the most underrated actor in film history.
Sup Forums is a shitfest too.
Yes it's good.
Harakiri's ending swordfight was terrible desu
Liked the rest of the movie though
Sword of Doom is cool and doesn't get enough coverage
...
>You will never live in a world where the two planned Sword of Doom sequels got made
Are the server's not accepting images anymore?
I don't know man, cut the sideplots and it's a.perfect film.
I don't live in the USA
Part one of a three part character arc ain't perfect.
I'll raise you samurai rebellion
9/10. Amazing shiet.
I don't know either man. Sure, I liked Yojimbo, but it's probably my least favorite of all the Kurosawa films I've seen.
Not seen Madadayo and Rhapsody I take it. Also we don't talk about Dodesukaden around these parts.
>tumblr gifs
>not real webms
why ruin them like this
Why don't you go make some for us.
3lazy5u and my workplace internet is shiet.
I Live In Fear is worse than all of the above. Still looks great though.
I only really have harakiri on hand, but I will webm any scene from that you want if you give me a timecode
Haven't even seen that one.
Anyway, is Dersu Uzala the comfiest Kurosawa?
T.V. became popular and the studios had too much power.
In every Samurai film thread someone mention a series of japanese ganster films that I wanted to watch but forgot the name, what was it? It started with a K I think.
stray dog is comfiest kurosawa
anyone else saying otherwise is a lying sack of shit but you should wait and watch it when it's really hot in the middle of summer
Battles Without Honor and Humanity, aka The Yakuza Papers?
I like it but Uzala is just perfectly comfy.
I will check those out but from what I recall it was just one word, maybe it was an abbreviation?
Outrage?
good pick my favorite as well.
just interesting to see post war Tokyo in the summer heat
Keep giving your money to buy entertainment from the jews, newfag.
agreed. its the type of movie kurosawa couldnt make because it depicts both sides of the same coin without reservation, whereas kurosawa had just a little too much reverence for the samurai.
yes.
strongly disagree, and despite what you may be thinking reading this post so far, kurosawa is actually one of my favorite directors. but for me, kagemusha felt like a little too much of a dry run for ran, and i dont think the more artistic elements coalesce much in kagemusha because they arent really in the service of anything substantial. still a beautiful movie though, but id say its probably his most overrated and doesnt even come to my top 10 outta him.
this question is relevant to my interests as well.
as is this. someone got a quick rundown?
i wouldn't go that far but hes up there.
yes.
someone gimme some power rankings on kobayashi, i haven't seen any of his work aside from harakiri, and id love some rankings and advice on how/where to proceed.
>someone got a quick rundown?
Missing gold, massacred villagers, one man on a mission forced out of retirement to resolve his troubled past.
Hideo Gosha's best movie, but less popular than Sword of the Beast for some reason.
THANKS user!
I will download but i won't watch it yet, i ain't prepared for this, i have to watch the rest of Kurosawa's works first
Ran is Kurosawa's best
I also assume saying Seven Samurai is the greatest will make me a pleb, but fuck it it's the fucking GOAT
Trips nigga knows what's up.
Best Kurosawa samurai movie is Throne of Blood. Best overall is Ikiru.
s m h everybody knows Kurosawa's Song of the Horse (1970) is his best film, if I ever catch you praising any of his movies besides Song of the Horse on this board again you'll regret it.
It's my second favorite of his after Dersu Uzala.
Dersu Uzala is shit. Basically the only shit movie he made. It's boring and sentimental toward Colonialism in a weird way that seems to put his own Japanese people on a lower level that Euros.
But mostly it sucks because it's boring
it's certainly the most influential.
Sucks that taking an interest in Japanese culture lumps you in with anime halfwits.
Lone Wolf and Cub is a very good manga, with many film and tv series adaptations.
Apparently it paints the Edo era pretty true to life.
The Human Condition trilogy is better but it's true that this movie is better than everythin Kuro
